bear and bobcats
There is a possibilty that I can get a transfer out of state through my job. My choices are MN WI VT or UP in michigan. I was wondering which of these states would be the best bet for bobcat and bear hunting. Being that I would be new to the area public hunting is important.

No bear hunting with hounds in MN.... In WI. An Mich you can hunt both.not sure how long it takes to get tags in Mich. But in WI. U might be retired before you draw one for either species.

Re: bear and bobcats
I can only speak for the UP of MI as I'm unfamiliar with the laws for the other states.
There is a lot of public land available, but there are also a lot of hunters from the UP and LP that hunt it with commercial baiting operations as well as hound hunters. Michigan's bear population is down due to over issuance of tags so please show restraint in killing. You could likely draw a third season tag annually up there in one unit or another, you'd just have to look at the draw statistics or wait until after the draw and buy a leftover OTC tag. In the off years that you do not have a kill tag, you'll need to buy a NKT(no kill tag) in order to hunt your dogs on bear. It's the same price as the kill tag at $15.
Cat season is January 1 - March 1 and you'd have a lot more of the woods to yourself. Winter time Coyote and Bobcat running are the norms for MI hound hunters. You'll need a small game license, a fur harvester license and you get two bobcat tags for free (but you have to ask for them) along with your fur harvester.
