God awful hunts

Post by Dale T »

Looking to here about the rough ones.

Mine was about 15 years ago, my father in-law and I were going for a quick coon hunt about a 1/2 hour drive away on Beale AFB, we took off about 9:00 treed a couple for coons and at 12:30 headed for the house the road where we were hunting made this big loop and on the way out we had this area where some kids had tore the road up 4-wheeling we pulled off the road to get around it and buried the truck to the frame after digging and working on it for a couple of hours I decided that we needed some help and started walking to a phone (this was before cell phones) we were suppose to meet my brother in-law and another friend of my father in-law Fay at 6:00 to go bear hunting, I walk to a gas station and called Fay he got to us at daylight and pulled us out, we got to the house grabbed breakfast and headed to the mountains about 45 min. away on the way the brakes on the truck started to make a bunch of noise and we had to pull over pulled the front tires off and clean all the mud out of the brakes, got to hunting and treed a small bear at about 11:30 it took us over a hour to get to the tree when got to there the bear bailed and headed away from the truck deeper into the canyon so we went back to the truck to get to the dogs, we had 7 dogs out, the bear lost em and they were scattered, at dark it started to rain and we finally picked up the last dog at 11:00 that night. Nothing of this hunt was that rough it was just when it was put into one hunt did it get that way.

I was duck hunting late December.

Got out of the truck, let dog (Drahthaar) go empty out in a large field, all by ourselves.
Im getting dekes and loading my gun, hear dog trailing/scent loud.
I hear a Kur Plunge.
I ran about 200 yards away shotgun in tow, in heavy winter duck gear after dog.
Dog has a racccoon in a small tributary about 15' across and 10' deep.
Dog is shaking coon, both are going submerged, dog lets go to breathe, tries to find coon, who is circling dogs back. They go at it like this at least 10 times.

So I climb down embankment, got gun in 1 hand, hold on to tree with another but cant shoot coon safely, too close to dog. I get a chance and try to whack coon over head with barrel of gun. No good. Pisses him off.
Finally I get a clear shot but have to let go of tree, and am now treading water. Water is freezing.
Shoot mr coon, tell dog fetch. We climb up embankment to corn field and run to the truck, get in and blast heater, and head for home. No ducks but a coon.
Warm bath ready per the wife.

worst hunt of my very green houndsmen career was this fall bear hunting. Out west of corning,ca hunting with a local who knew the area. We had pretty fresh snow and were blown away with how many bear tracks we had seen since neither of us had seen any since the beginning of the season. We started a track with his lead bluetick female and turned my two black and tans in behind her up the ridge some. We ran it up and over a couple ridges into a nasty rock canyon. He informed us that there are a lot of caves and rock piles down there above the creek. We could hear the dogs just going crazy. His blue tick was down there, my two black dogs and a buddies walker who he was trying to get to run bear (good coon dog). We sat there about an hour before we decided to head in. He had his young son with him and he said he doesn't go in that canyon, wish I would of made the same decision. My father in law, two buddies and I headed in some nasty brush country towards the dogs. The buck brush was thick everything was covered in thorns and you couldn't move hardly ten feet in ten minutes. I thought there was only about two finger ridges between us and they canyon the dogs were in boy I was wrong. After about a two-three hour hike to get above them we couldn't hear very well with wind, my father in law asked me to bring him the tracking box. I walked over to him turned around and he just said "OH NO". i spun around and he was holding a section of rope I had in my bag. My pack had ripped open I lost my tracking box, a pistol, a camera, a video recorder, a range finder, and two blue gloves. We searched til almost dark but you couldn't even see broken limbs from where we walked. Next couple weeks we couldn't even get near the ridge we were on due to snow and know everything is leafed out and impossible to see the ground. But will continue to search just for the sake of getting lucky. Worst day of my life so far. Rendered me unable to finish the year with no tracking box. We didn't even kill the bear, it's track was a monster though it cut the local guys blue tick pretty good needed stitches. :(
