I THOUGHT ALL HOUNDS WERE POTLICKERS, did not know it referred to Blueticks only. I would not tell any one there is only one breed of hound that made a dog that caught bobcat. Every time I thought I had that figured out some came alone with a hound that proved me wrong. Such was the case with blueticks, George Horner Jr. had a couple blueticks that sure changed my mind. Now, I in no way was suggesting to David that he get Dave Dean breed Blueticks to bobcat hunt with. Just telling him ( at his request ) that is where I suspect that beautiful mouth came from on the Hiede female. Fact is that Dean bred Bluetick that I suspect put that voice on Hiede, was the same type hound ( according to George Sr. ) as David described Hiede to be. Jim Davis, had a large Bluetick, he purchase as a pup from the lee Brothers. Ferggie made a name for himself as a hound that caught bobcat well here in S.W. Oregon. Davises, & Horners were good tough houndsmen who hunted together a lot and had good success hunting those type hounds. To my knowledge have never hunted with a Careron bred blue. But I suspect if one hunted with enough of them, would find a good bobcat hound in them. Something to think about, when breeding for running dog only, one is only breeding for half a hound, compared to breeding for a hound that can push a cat to the tree, then locate & tree. Would think that would make breeding for running only a little easier, but, what do I know? Very little. Hunt the hound of your choice.Thanks AL

I also thought all hounds could be refered to as potlickers? You learn something new every day.

Al, I believe this cross I have out back could be taken either direction in a handful of breedings if a guy was motivated to do so. But for where we live a treeing/running balance is needed. Much like riding a bicycle centered on a white line down a paved road. That balance can be tough. John.

Have to agree with you again Al, my thoughts are you should be able to find the full blooded treeing dog that is able to do it all just takes some fine tuning in the breeding pen . I meen no disrepect for the running dog crosses as they must be dandys when find the right mixture ailso.Jmo Andy

Hi Andy, I look at things a little differently than most probably do. I know there are treeing walkers and running walkers, and those carry certain traits. With that said, a hunter that is lucky enough to raise entire litters of pups realise's pretty quick that not all pups are created equal. To me the term running dog just describes its track style, the right treeing walker cross will produce pups that carry the so called running dog traits. Making for some dandy treeing walkers. The kind I'm interested in. But, I dont really know what I'm talking about. I'm just calling this, like I see it. John.

John, that is one way to look at it as with the right crosses I believe a tree hound to tree hound will produce the track ability and endurance you find in the running dog crosses. Not saying they all will be capable of this. As the same when crossing treeing dogs to running dogs if its not the right mixture you don't get the whole package. Andy
