Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
John Allen, Alan Bauer and Cody Whittle came down from MO last week to hunt with Joe Braman and I near Refugio. We hunted Thursday evening and Friday morning battling dry conditions and wind. We finally caught a cat about 1:30 AM on Sat., sleep a couple of hours and caught another about 8:30 AM the same morning. Hunters and dogs were blown out so we loafed and visited Sat. evening and shot interviews for CARNIVORE.
I have always been a fan of Black Gold but after hunting and visiting with the MO boys, I am an even bigger fan. They truly understood what was going on and genuinely listened to the hounds trying to work tough tracks. These are great guys who make a great product and truly understand hounds.
Adios,
Gary

Black Gold dry dog food is at the very low end of dog foods. They have consistently received very low ratings. Here is a review from one website that rates all major brands. They may be great guys but they aren't helping your dogs health at all.

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
Tim,
It is a brand of Dog feed.
Rod,
Their new Season should start this Summer! It should have some great Cat Hound episodes!
Mr. Dean,
I have seen this and another Dog Food Rating blog before. One was paid for by the Blue Buffalo Dog Food company. Neither had results that matched what we had experience with! Both promoted high priced "touchy feely" feeds that we could not have afforded to feed a small pack of Chihuahua's on.
Black Gold has several different Types and formulations of feed. Some are certainly better than others. Black Gold Black darn sure kept our Hounds Healthy and Hunting harder in a week than most folks do in a month! Oh and they digested it, not leaving most of what they ate in large, stinky piles in their pen. Cost here in AR for a 50# bag around $28.00

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
Carnivore airs in the third and fourth quarter on Pursuit Channel. Since it is the top rated show on the channel, they use it to fill a void in their schedule from time to time.
I stopped giving a lot of credibility to the folks that are rating dog foods when I found that they don't look at anything but the food tags. Some of the companies have learned how to play the system in order to attain higher ratings.
I know that there are very few folks who hunt their dogs as hard as Joe and his dogs body condition, hair coat and stamina has increased since changing over to Black Gold. It took a long time for me to convince him to give it a try as he has been on Purina Pro Plan for years and it is a dang good food.
Adios,
Gary

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
Gary-- you are right about that rating method.
the proof is in the feeding.. very little clean up after Black Gold.
another myth that those folks promote is that corn is not good for dogs--- BUT the secret is it must be cooked.
I would think the dog foods that get the bad rap on that do not cook it enough.
Certainly Black Gold does things right! if one can find it without a long drive it is tops.

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
i fed black gold until the price went from 21$ for a 40lb bag to 30$ for a 40lb bag in about 1-1 1/2 years i called black gold and asked them what the heck was going on they claimed they havent raised prices in years so it must be my distributor. they sent me some coupons to get it a lil cheaper but when they were gone i unfortunately had to switch brands.

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
Mr. Al,
We fed the Black Gold in the black bag....I think it is a 26/18 or 20.
We feed a 1# coffee can every day to most of the Hounds, Large Hounds get more. When not hunting a bout half as much.

I used to feed this, price went up to much so I changed over to Diamond. Been happy since. Always looking to change if I can find a better buy.

Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
All the feed in my country has gone sky high!!! All distributers say fuel prices, fuel coming down dog feed aint?
I have been feeding Showtime in the blue bag, $24.00 for 50# and the turds you can chip em out of dog pen with a golf club... During the cold winter and hunting dogs hard I melt some lard (maybe a teaspoon per dog) and pour over their feed to add extra fat and stools still are solid and dogs maintain their weight... Every feed I have tried, you have to give something extra in the winter... I did like the Black Gold but over priced just like the Diamond (green bag) and seems to me that Diamond ain't as good as it use to be!
Re: Hunt with the Boys from Black Gold
I feed mine dry dog food when I can not find raw meat. Deer processors you can get leg bones, bags of chickens that are on sale and cans of mackerel.
Great for there teeth and keeps them clean.
