I started all my best lion dogs on coon. some of the best experiance they can get in my opinion. I also had dogs that weren't locating and treeing real great. after they treed a few coons and got them kicked out on top of them, they were awesome. always lookin up. give it a whirl.

I run cats all winter and then run coons all summer, i never had any problems at all, i think it makes for great dogs to get them out in the woods and treeing and tracking again. The guy that taught me how to lion hunt and how to hunt hounds has been running dos for 25 years and he taught me to get the dogs out as much as possible. Have fun. And remember to keep the tradition alive one TREE AT A TIME.

IMO coon hunting makes great locate and tree dogs. It's good excersize for the dogs and it don't ruin them at all. There still treeing and trailing that's wat u want. Go out and run them coons won't hurt dogs one bit.

Agree with every post, get your dogs out and tree as much game as you can. The only bad thing you can do with your dogs is keep them in the kennel.

I haul mine all over the country coon hunting in the summer. Just got back from Missouri. Catch cats all winter long with the same dogs. I hunt my dogs every chance I get. I can't watch a dog go to waste. They're bred to trail and tree so let them do it as much as you can. All it will do is make them better.

I hunt 300-330 days a year. Coon all summer and lion/coon all winter. All the hounds I've ever had are started on coon. If they can run coon, they can dang sure run a big stinkin lion. Besides, it's not like you have to worry about your dogs runnin coon in the lion woods. Generally not much for coon in the mountains, at least where I hunt.

Would you run coons with your cat hounds. Say if you were going to try to run some bobbers in Kansas where there are a lot of coons. Mostly run cats back there in the snow.
