Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
PLEASE feel free to cross post this info on other sites to let other Houndsmen Know about the DC50 collars.
We can finally announce the New DC50 collar. I don't know if there has been a product that I have been waiting for any longer than the DC50 collar. Most of you know that I was not happy with the DC40 collar's performance, From Day one of the DC40 I have been anxiously looking forward to the day I could offer a DC50 collar.
Today has finally come, and I'll make no reservation, The DC50 is a Very nice collar.
Here is some information with a complete review about the DC50.
Buddy's Garmin Astro DC50 Product Review
Purchase Garmin Astro DC50 Collar
Purchase a 320 and DC50 bundle
This isn't going to make me switch from using the Alpha, but if you don't want to switch to the Alpha and want to continue using the Garmin Astro this is the choice for you. The only down side that I see is that the collars are not compatible to the 220 for several reasons..

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
Why are they not compatable with the 220? If I have to replace my 220's with 320's for these collars to work, I would just buy a Alpha and be done with it. I would buy some of these but I have 3, 220's and a 320, and I am not going to throw away my 220's. To be honest I really dont think the 320 is any better than the 220 other than the Birdseye view, that is the only reason I have a 320.

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
my question is,does this mean they will stop making the dc40? Im still running an astro 220.Have no need for birdseye, and other than that I cant see any real atvantage over the 220.

I think I'm going to wait till next month. I have someone on the inside with garmin. And we will be able to get the DC 60's. Which will be compatible with the 220, 320, and the Alpha.
Take care, Willie

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
Is there any increased range over the 30's or noticeable difference in dependability with losing communication?

A question someone posted on another site is "once you upgrade the 320 can you continue tracking the 30 and 40 collars as well?"

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
Folks,
While I am and have not used the DC 50, I have two friends on the East Coast who have used the 50s for several months. They sure like them!
Other than not being compatible with the Astro 220 there really have been no negatives....there have been several Software Upgrades and different Antenna changes during Testing and each made the Collar better.
To answer the questions being asked, to the best of my knowledge here they are:
Bearhunter, my sources say that Garmin is not making any more DC 40s....but will continue to Service the ones already in use. I agree that the 220 did everything I wanted. I have recommended to several of my friends too take advantage of the good deals that are coming on Used DC 30s and keep using the 220s.
Daniel, I am told that with the longer Ant. range is better....how much, well that depends on the cover and terrain you are running in. Consistency with Com is much much better!
Mr. Budd, it is my understanding, I called a Tester this morning to check, is that you can use all three collars with then 320. You just have to update the 320 so it can read the DC 50.
Willie, your sources are good! Mine say that the New Mars Platform coming out from Garmin in 2015 will incorporate all the Technology of the ALPHA but add a Micro phone, Camera, and a "Scent Analyzer" which will be able to determine the type of Varmint your Hounds are running and show the correct Icon on the 15 inch fold out screen that the receiver will have. I hear that you will be able to program the System to Shock/Train your Hound if they bark at the wrong Scent. Also Garmin is adding the "Milky Way" Satellite System to the Mars GPS System so that no matter where in the Universe Your Hounds are running you will have Com with them.
Willie, Buddyw and DU Supply is the only place to Pre Order the Mars so call him and get your Deposit and order in early!

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
Don/t make sense. Why would Garmin make a collar that does not work on any receiver without an upgrade & how much is the cost to upgrade the 320 Al Al
Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
Al, its a free software upgrade. You just update it like you would your collars.

Re: Garmin DC50 Collar info and Review
I just got my first DC50 in today, to go along with 2 DC40s and 4 DC30s that I already have.
I did all of the software updates and now I'm just waiting for my next trip to the woods to test it out.
I am glad that Garmin is installing an aftermarket style long range antenna, and not only that, but included a 2nd one as well. It was always a pain to get in a brand new unit then have to replace that crappy factory antenna so you could get a signal beyond 400 yards.
I've been told the 50s have better range, so we'll so find out.
My only question is on the dog barking alert. It's not mentioned in any of the paperwork that came in the box? I am running a 320, so I'm confused on how it will work?

We raise, train, and hunt Kemmer Stock Mt. Curs for finding and baying wild, feral hogs here in south Texas.
