runnin breed vs tree hound
Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Al, All I know is the one is Cameron and Uchtman hammer, Real small super athletic dog. All the guy said when I bought her is she tree's decent but could use some work otherwise she has done good on coon and bear. I took her out that night and tree'd a coon with her and I dont know if the guy was blind or hard of hearing but when she tree'd you knew it and she was on the wood and on her A$$ just screaming... The other dog all the guy said was if you dont like her bring her back... She has been tearing up the woods on bobcat locates in big timber, solid tree dog... Both rig real good, I have had Zero problems with either of the East coast Blue's might dink with a rabbit when it jumps out in front of them but thats it...

Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Thanks Merlo, how do they handle a ducking dodging cat, are they close track dogs on that type cat? What are some of your longer races time wise? Do they use good voice when working a track? I know some do not believe dogs trained on coon & bear can be switched to strait cat, but have seen it done & the dogs did a very good job on bobs. I have seen dogs that were worked as bear, cat & coon & performed great at all three. Heck they were even know to catch a coyote at times. Also know some dogs who do well on bear & coon do not have the track style for a true cat dog. One thing I need to say on another subject. The high of my summer was having the Clays visit me at my home, they are as nice people has one will ever meet. And every time I think of Mr. Finney tell me that on his way to Florida, he put his ear phones in & just listens to cat races Cary has recorded and relaxes as Cary drives, it brings a smile. Al

Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Most if not all the running dogs I've seen have a natural tendency to overrun or swing wide on a track but if you put a big pack of them together ,they can flat out run a cat. I breed and select for dogs that run close to the track. They get in a cat's back pocket and make him climb and you don't need a pack to do it !
Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Some cat's do not climb. My family has had mixed running dogs for at least 80 years and the packs fan out and work as a team. Anytime you have a team working together they can always beat an individual. When hunting in area’s with low cat populations it takes a pack that fans out and covers lot’s of ground. Some of us enjoy the race and catching or treeing the cat is secondary. In all those years none of those hounds were sold and no amount of money would buy any of them.
I like and have good tree hounds, but a mixed running hound well bred, is just as good or better and no single hound or couple of hounds can compete with a well oiled pack.

I might give a good pack a slight edge but i've caught to many cat with1 or2 dogs .With a pack you've always got a dog or two screwing things up.

Yes,a can catch as many cat with1or2 top dogs as you can with a pack. Its extremely difficult to breed and train1dog that can do it alone but it sure gives you a feeling of accomplishment. This is just my view and isn't meant to offend anyone who hunts a pack. Its just not the way i do it.

Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Robin is a dedicated hound man, he owned & trained the sire to my skinner hound. He will not keep a hound that does not tree cats alone. He has culled more dogs than most own in a life time. He accepted the reward for JC Freeman, and is pictured to my right in the gathering picture. He also bred & trained the Buddy hound that the Clays saw at my place. True to his word Robin told me the Buddy hound swung too wide on a lose to suit him, even tho he out ran the other hounds bad at times he was not going to keep him. I do not own buddy, my hunting friend owns him & will until he expires. Just goes to show lots like different type hounds. Buddy has been a real pleasure to hunt with for the past five years and we would love to have a litter out of him. For sure some bobs have been caught that would have eluded without his tireless drifting energy & he is an awesome rig dog with a good hound mouth plus a good nose. He will go father to look for an old rigged track than some dogs go to hunt in a days time. Yes I bragged on him, but not own him. Good job breeding & training Robin. Also several years ago, the first time I hunted with Robin he gave me 9 month old a half sister to Skinner. That I trained into a very nice cat hound. Thanks Robin Al
Re: runnin breed vs tree hound
Sorry Al for not showing up as I had said, I was in a hurry to get home. Is this buddy hound a blue dog or walker ? Just curious because i heard Robin has some top notch blue dogs.
