He's not a cop that is hound and he is just looking for some guidance for him and his kids just joining the sport as well. I'm sure now that we've informed him of the laws here in California he won't post such things on the internet anymore. A case of ignorance due to lack of experience in the sport and it's laws

I think the best thing you can do for your dog is to get it in the woods and hunt it wether with your friends or not. Dogs are like people they all have individual personalities it's not uncommon for a dog to wander around the first couple times in the woods. Most of us that hunt have our dogs in the woods long before they're two years old. So I would say your dog is already behind the curve and you need to expose him to the woods as much as possible to catch him up to his age. if you take him to several more trees and he still does the same thing he may not be worth keeping around for coon hunting. like several previous post said you really need to be up on your local laws reference live catching animals and using them as trainers most states don't allow it.
