Question about hounds
Question about hounds
I ride my mules a lot in the desert and mountains and see a lot of lion tracks. I ride with just a couple of cow dogs. I was just wondering can hounds be like my cow dogs and just follow along with me until they get on a lion track then go after it. Can they be good pets at home while they are not hunting. My dogs have never had leashes on them or never been in a kennel they just stay around the ranch will a hound do the same. I would like to get one but also need it to be just a good all around dog.

Re: Question about hounds
Yes you definitely can. Might have to teach him not to go hunting with out you.
Re: Question about hounds
Hounds make great pets...I have 2 blueticks and a black and tan and they all stay in the house with us and r greaat hunters too. If you want them to just stay in the yard when u r not around, however, it will definately take some work. Teaching any hound to stick around is not easy...they are bred to run and hunt.

Re: Question about hounds
I have a female that I always have loose and is in a kennel only when she is in heat but that is the only hound I ever had that I could do that. When hunting I hardly ever use a leash, it can suck though if its late and you are heading to the truck from a tree and they start another race, though usually I can call them off unless its a hot track which usually means a short race.
Re: Question about hounds
I do it exactly like that my hounds walk with my mule tell we strike and off we go then I go home a they lounge around but I also have no one around for a couple miles he just helps to raise them that way you probably want have much luck buying an older hound and expecting him to stick around much

Re: Question about hounds
Only one of my hounds is like that, I can leave the house overnight and come home the next day and he will be sleeping on the front porch. The other ones will be running wild but eventually come home to eat.
