Multiple species hounds
My name is Allen from Sauk Rapids mn. So I really wanted to run bobcats with my coon hounds now that moved from western wi. I know plenty of guys that run coon and cats. That was my intention but I have to travel to far to find cats here to make hunting them work for me. Does anyone else out there run the same dogs on coon coyotes and bear? My thought is my dogs will run what ever I put them on during the day and at night when I cast them they will run coon. The seasons don't overlap. I run coon spring fall and summer. Coyotes in the snow. And bear in July in wi. Am I nuts. I think the thing I will be struggling with is coon hunting. Any thoughts would be apreciated.
Thanks Allen

I run my dogs on coyote coon and cats. They just favor some more than others.

Re: Multiple species hounds
Do they struggle with coon once you have encouraged coyote?
Re: Multiple species hounds
Not really they still do well on coon.

Re: Multiple species hounds
We run coon, coyote, cat, bear, and fox with the same hounds. Usually when cook hunting it is to dry for our hounds to take a coyote, but has happened, in the snow they pretty much stay with what we started them on, unless they happened to jump something else while cold tracking. We have had them jump a bobcat when cold tracking a coyote and vise versa. All in all its amazing what them hounds can do!

That is really encouraging. I hope to do the same. My dogs are more enjoyable the more I run them. How many hound do you run? I am debating getting a few more pups. I would not say my current two are finished but I know each of there strengths and weaknesses.

My father in law has 6 I had 2 one just died so I'm waiting for some pups. Got quite a few guys we hunt with that have 2 to about 5, and all run everything with them, seems to work for us.

Re: Multiple species hounds
Hey chiller, where is the dog located? Might want to talk, why is he getting rid of him?
Re: Multiple species hounds
dog in located in solway mn. I don't know the exact reason he just told me to ask around I will get you in contact with him if you would like.
Re: Multiple species hounds
people give me a hard time because I hunt wild hogs with my dry ground lion hounds. I also hunt bear, bobcat, coon, and anything else that will run from me. some times I hunt different species within days of each other. I don't think it is neccisarilly a breed thing as much as just hunting them that way from day one. Any dog I own had better be able to run whatever I point them at!
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.
