Photo or shot?

On my thread about gun/caliber and else where as I have been reading, say they only take pictures. I am still "young" and inexperienced as a hunter of all kinds of animals not just those pursued with hounds.

For me the game is still about bagging game after good dog work. Is there a type of genesis that happens down the road when the kill becomes less important?

Does the season continue with pictures after you have taken an animal?

I'm not going to vote because you do not have a both vote i think you will mature to the point where the kill becomes less important to you i try not to kill small animals or mothers up here coon hunting but at times it is hard because you can not always tell what it is especially in a conifer but i guess the easy way to explain it is take only what you need and only what you can use if you have a purpose by all means if you want it take it but do not waste it if you don't need it leave it to run another day it is not all about the numbers don't get me wrong i have shot small animals before when training or trying to finish young dogs and i feel there is a benefit to it but I'm also a taxidermist so i try to put them to good use. my brother and i while guiding bear hunters all tho legal to shoot try and talk the hunters out of shooting sows with cubs usually with a very high success rate like someone once said "take a picture it last longer " or " a pictures worth a thousand words" good luck Larry

I HAVE FOUND THAT I STILL HAVE THE SAME RUSH CHASING AND TREEING THE ANIMAL AND THEN TAKING ITS PICTURE AS I DO HARVESTING IT. IN RETURN IT LEAVES THE ANIMAL FOR ME NOT ONLY TO CHASE ANOTHER DAY BUT REPRODUCE FOR MORE OFFSPRING TO REPLENISH THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN TAKEN. I DONT BELIEVE THERE IS A THING WRONG WITH HARVESTING THE ANIMAL AS LONG IT IS DONE IN A CONTROLLED SITUATION AND THE RIGHT ANIMAL IS BEING HARVESTED.

Exactly what I was going to say, why ruin a good day by dragging your guts out. I don't have a problem with people that want to harvest game, thats their legal rite, but I hope they use their better judgement and harvest mature males. When I lived in Indiana and only coon hunted at first numbers were also important, then the prices bottomed out and no one was buying coon I found out that the numbers were not so important, it was more about the dog work. Now all I do is TRY to run bobcat, I probably carried a gun in 4 or 5 times this year just cause I wanted to get the race ended before it got dark, but I also let some friends kill a few cats over my dogs, all mature toms except one that my wife killed.

Well I believe that is a tricky question, I would bet that there are alot more non-hunters in each state than hunters, Why we really have hunting is because most believe we need management of any animal.. The anti don't want management every thing they do is on emotion.. With that said each hunter has to do what he thinks is right both for their hunting opportunities and game management. The game dept will tell you how to manage it and we as hunters have are opionions. I say if you honestly believe harvesting that particular animal will help management without being destructive to the overall species be proud. If you are satisfied with taking pictures that is enjoying a resource without having to deprive anyone else or yourself of that natural resource.

Jeremy , NO Hunt is all about the KILL . Its as simple as that . You can go to a fenced pen and shoot a big bull Elk and you killed something , sure thing . But what about the element of the hunt where you are actually out hunting and seeing game and learning about them getting to see them out there and abserve them ?
To most of us its ALL about the hunt , the excitement of seeing and being close to game .

And that holds true , and even more so with game that is treed by dogs , ( especially on Big Game out in the West here. ) For instance , If we would kill every Cougar that we tree , we wouldn't have any left out there for next year , its as simple as that !!! And that is true in a lot of different circumstances and we as houndsmen need to realize this and excercise self-control and conservation when we are in the woods !!
