Fox habitats?
Fox habitats?
What type of habitats are you finding foxes in, especially on the east coast. I know in my area the lower farm land with patch woods have fox, but I hunt a lot up in the mountains and don't see much for foxes at all. I know our coon population and I believe are cat population is ok. I never hear any of the local hound guys talk about running fox or cat and it's something I've been messing around with alone with my hounds.

Gray Fox on the West coast are found in the mountains and in the farm lands....I just started running Gray fox with my dogs after tripping over dozens of fox seen while out hunting on the ranch.....Plenty of different food sources in the farm lands more so than the mountains so I find more fox there....Many of those lower elevation farm lands have to many homes to run, so I head for the mountains to run them....I stop and take a few pictures like the one posted sitting in the driveway into the ranch below...

I hunt foxes in Va. I like east of charlottesville and west of richmond. We have both reds and greys that cover the areas I hunt. Greys will be found in your thickest areas, cutovers, if theres a ton of briars, thick low trees, etc thats where they greys will tend to be found. Reds can thrive in the open famrland, our wooded areas, will find reds using the same thick areas to feed but normally they wont run in the thicket they will go back to the big timber. so id say in the mountians of Va you would be more likely to find the red foxes, i know whwnei used to work on equipment on dairy farms and traveled up and down 81 alot and road over that direction i saw red foxes and red fox territory

Thanks guys! Perk, I'm just west of you about 15 min west of staunton. I hunt alotof national forest. It can vary from flat hardwood stands to very steep and sometimes rocky ridges and hollars. I very seldomly hunt open crop fields. I've seen a lot of cat tracks while bear hunting in highland this year but we haven't had as much snow on our side of the mountain to get time to go look for tracks. The few foxes I have seen have been goin back and forth to work which is over towards the more open farms.

I find them in swva in thick laurel patches. especially the areas with the shorter cedars and pines. Also if you have clearcut areas that have grown back thick. I have been running cats on the nf and I frequently have gray fox races in these areas. I have been treating them like trash albut have been thinking of starting to try and run them. Dogs seem to be more than willing...lol
