Lion scratches

Post by Tycoon7 »

I'm new to lion hunting so I don't know a whole lot about it but my buddy and I have been hiking our butts off and found an area that has 5 lion scrapes all within a half mile. One of them the lion had crapped right on the pile it scraped up. A pretty big one too. Is it normal to see that?

Tycoon 7,

Lion scratches are a very interesting subject. Why they scratch in a certain spot, and the meaning of scratches has been a subject for discussion since hunters first started hunting lions. But as far as the number of scratches you found, and the scat on top of one that is not so unusual. I was trailing a tom about a month ago. He went out on a high rim and he made upwards of 50 scratches on this rim. My thought was he had to be breeding a female, but his track was the only one I could find. On another day a few weeks ago the hounds struck a track. The ground was real hard and try as I might I could not find a track. The hounds had trailed several miles. going where I would expect a lion to go. Out on long rims but no scratches. Late in the afternoon I crossed a big canyon and out on another high rim. I got in behind the hounds and there it was a large scratch. Why had that tom traveled that far without scratching? I will never know. But it just goes to show how hard it can be to figure these lions out sometimes.

It seems like when there's a female somewhere in the area they do a lot more scratching.

Chris,

I have seen that too and I have thought at times this tom was trying to slip over the territory line and poach a girlfriend on the side. LOL! He slipped over there left a discreet note and hoped big daddy did catch him fooling around in his backyard. LOL!
