Training my pup on coyotes
Training my pup on coyotes
I have been working with my pup the past few months putting him on hot tracks in the snow. Hes 7 months old and is doing alright, just trying to get him to gain the courage to take off on his own. Now the snow is starting to melt and I was wandering if anyone had any tips for training on dry ground, anything helps thanks
Re: Training my pup on coyotes
All we have is dry ground here. Never ran in the snow. Do you have a running pen you can go to ? I start mine on rabbit or fox in a small sight pen and then when they are big enough ( 6-7 months ) I take them to the coyote pen and then to the outside hunting. If your dog is 7 months old it should be starting to get the picture. Running dogs will anyway. Tree dogs can be a little slower to mature and start.

I believe there is a pen in ny a few hours from me too go too, just wasn't sure if he was old enough for that or not. I really don't have much experience running coyotes or a dog by himself at that, I'm new to alot of it and am just going from tips I hear or read about. And my dog is a treeing walker. I have heard the running hounds pick things up a little quicker but have never really been around any
Re: Training my pup on coyotes
He's not ready to run with older dogs in a pen. Take him and run with pups his age and only let him have a couple hours worth. A pup can hurt his self physically in a running pen. It's not like outside running. Not many looses and it's steady running so a pup can get a good dose quick. It's definitely a good place for him to get a good nose full of what he's suppose to be running.

Alrighty I will give that a try. I know about two mOnths ago I got him fired up on a caged fox and let it run outta sight and turned him loose and he chased it quite a ways and even opened up on it a few times, but once he realized he was alone he came back.
