I call B.S. on Dewy Simply because he wouldn't know a cat dog if it bit him in the arse. And no one can catch that many cats. And when he does that is why nobody else can catch any. So there is no way he could possibly be right about anything!!

I think we sometimes try, too hard, to keep hounds that will please others, or meet their standards. I mostly hunt by myself. Several years ago, I started to try to keep hounds I liked, and enjoyed. I started running bobcats and gray fox with hounds 68 years ago, with my Father, who will be 99 yrs old in June. I suggest, we get the kind we like and enjoy, keep them in the woods, and have fun. Life goes by pretty fast. Most important,Faith and Family. I'll hush now, John

I have the perfect dogs. They are running dogs and I enjoy the heck out of them. I learned a long time ago that a man can drive his self crazy trying to get the best pack for what ever he's chasing. Or as you fellows in the west say " catch ". We chase or tree in the south. Catching is what trappers do here. At one time I had over a hundred running walkers. All papered dogs bred to run coyote / fox and I drove myself crazy trying to have a pack for outside running a pack for field trialing and always had 15 or 20 pups on the ground looking for that next special something. When you find that great something it's usually a freak. It never throws like offspring and lots of times you can never get the same results from making that cross again. Seen my coon hunting buddies trade ,sale , buy , cull , kill and borrow thousands of dollars looking for that super dog. The same thing I use to do with the running dogs. The fact is the dog that most people are wanting doesn't exist. There are some freaks out there that excel above the rest but for the most part what we have are Average. I learned a while back to be happy with what the good Lord blesses me as far as dogs go and to enjoy ever time He allows me to turn them out. We only here for a little while. Better enjoy what we got while we got it. Just my thoughts for the day.

Al nobody owns one that is the point. I have seen some really good ones maybe better than most because how I hunt and who I call friends. Tom has a little female that is less than 2 years old that is real close. I expect to catch a bobcat every trip out that does not mean that I do. Why would I go hunting if I didn't plan to catch a cat. I love the dogs, cold trailing and working young dogs but if I don't expect the best from them how can they expect the best from me. Dewey

I love hunting with hounds I like. I've had a lot of them. Things happen and at times I've found myself with a pack of Get Bys that I don't really like but if you're going to hunt you got to hunt with what ya got. Right now I hunt with the ones I dislike the least. LOL

DEWEY nothing wrong with that, however I go hunting to enjoy the hounds working, want to hear the music, would not want all of the pack to be quite mouthed. I truly enjoy hearing the excitement in a squall mouth hound. Do I like to tree cats, sure, would I rather tree a cat with that type hound in ten minutes, or hear a more vocal pack take an hour to put one up? I would take the vocal pack any day, why would I want to cut a good sounding race short? Guess, that's just how we differ, maybe we will learn to understand each other as being very different. As you say hunt what you like. We hunt for two very different reason, as you say it/s a big part of your living. For me, it was my stress release from work, nothing like taking to the hills with just the hounds & I, when I was healthy, after dealing with the public & crew all week at work. Take care Al

I don't own a quiet month dog I just own dogs that won't open behind other dogs barking at their as... There is sure a few people that know more about my dogs than I do and have never hunted with them. I love to hear a good race that is just a roar and have had many of them. I will not hunt dogs that make a lot of noise barking with each other, at each other or barking trying to catch up. Most people may not know the difference I do. I wish you all could hear a bunch of part running dogs blow the top out of a tree that are not suppose to be able to tree. What is the difference in ignorance and stupid? It is hard to tell sometimes so I looked it up. Dewey

Gosh Dewey did not mean to insinuate you hunt tight mouth dogs, nor did I say part running dogs will not tree, heck, I know some full running dogs tree. One of the best cat hounds I ever owned was at least 1/4 running and probley had a little more running blood than that. He was very balanced, strike, track & tree. I just think I like a little more mouth than what your idea of the perfect cat hound is, if that makes me ignorant or stupid I accept that. No one has ever accused me of being real intelligent, anything I have accomplished in life has been a struggle. Take care Al

Scrubrunner, Mr. Rod, JKohnke, Southern Fox, and you others who are Hunting Running Walkers and Triggs, please help me explain the "Style" of the type of Hound we all want....that Hound who will give plenty of mouth when he/she HAS the Track and SMELLS the Game.

Help explain how when Scenting Conditions are terrible or the Track is Cold/Bad only the Hounds right in the Scent Column can (or will) Bark....how the other Hounds in the Pack are Silent and busting their Asses to get to where they can SMELL the Game.

How with the RIGHT kind of Hounds we have little to no "Me Too" Barking....yet we still Hear plenty of Hound Music. Then when Scenting Conditions are RIGHT we have that ROAR on the Jumped Game.

This and the WAY Fox Hound Bred Hounds move a Track, to me are the Significant Ways in which these Hounds differ from the Coon Dog Bred Hound!
