Working on another folder design

I wanted a lock back with the lock release in a slightly different place. After lots of drawing and cutting cardboard I tried a prototype.
It's pretty normal to have some tuning problems on a first try and this one was no different.

It turned out good enough for a work knife so I stuck it in my back pocket and started using it. A silversmith lives nearby and stopped the other day. She's been wanting to engrave another gun and has done a few knives already so I showed her my new work knife. She drew out a pattern while I watched and left with my knife.

Here's my new go to church blade. Thanks to Amy Raymond Silver, She does a great job on stainless as well as silver.

looks good. I have often wondered about burl oak as scale material. its easy to get here and looks beautiful ,but I don't know how durable thin pieces would be. I guess if a guy cut several blanks and tested them for brittleness then was very careful and made sure to soak them in a light tongue oil mixture then burnished them out they may work. I've rough cut some pieces messing around that flexed enough . just haven't seen it tried I guess. what was your thoughts on the lock in the center of the handle?

Nathan, There's a way they stabilize woods that are real pretty but not tough enough. Some get dye's added at the same time. It makes the wood as tough as the denser woods but adds expense.
I wanted the lock release away from the back of my palm as that's the only place I ever use any force on my knives I use my fingers and thumb up front for control and that pocket in my palm for slight leverage. I thought that moving the release slightly forward would
make it a bit safer. Kershaw made a knife they called the Wild Turkey that had a release like this.
I haven't had a lock release when I didn't want it to for years (better handling now) but safer is better.

Blue. By better I mean it's tuned better. The spring on the lock is nice and it opens smooth and locks real crisp. I'll get a picture of it and what ever sheath I come up with when I get it back.

That is one nice looking knife, the design looks similar to one Doug gave me. I didn't know you were into making knives as will as sheaths.

I didn't start out to build any knives, just fix a few old leather tools in the shop. With a little help from guys like Doug & Bruce it kinda got fun. RS
