IF I RUN A BOB WITH JUST ONE DOG, AM I TAKING A BIG RISK?
IF I RUN A BOB WITH JUST ONE DOG, AM I TAKING A BIG RISK?
IF I RUN A BOBBIE WITH JUST ONE DOG, AM I TAKING A STUPID RISK??
I've had a lot of experience running bear and longtails. But I just moved to Washington--where I believe you can only chase bobcats and coon. I don't have much experience with the bobcats, and I was wondering whether it is a stupid idea to run a bobcat with just one hound.

First to correct you about a point.. In Washington It's illeagal to Run Bobcats. You might be thinking of oregon..
But to answer your question I wouldn't have a problem turning one dog loose. My first couple cats only had one dog at the tree. but I can only catch the stupid ones, You'll have to ask a true cat hunter about the smarter cats.
I think the bigger question is if you want to run Bob's then you have to get over worring about "stupid"..
Being smart and a Cat hunter don't work so well together.
So If there's one thing I've figured out about chasing bobcats.. It's how to look stupid..
welcome to the Board.

one dog is fine like they said also like they said as member of cat hunters anonymous /CHA i can only tell you this i have never smoked crack but they say it is very addicting smoke it once and your hooked multiply that times ten and and that will tell you what your heading for you will be traveling down a lonely road no other hunting can compare you will probably loose friends and family all your money will be spent in the pursuit or attempted pursuit of the elusive critter you will find yourself doing things that are completely against your nature and beyond your physical capabilities your life will be turned upside down the only thing you will be able to think of are cats all your waking hours and your sleeping hours they will haunt your dreams you will find yourself searching the Internet for others like you so you can talk to others about them and rambling on try to talk some one out of making the same mistakes that you have made when your season is over. don't give in to the peer pressure don't light the pipe
oh i should also tell you once you achieve greatness or even become a little bit successful it is like hitting the lottery you will have friends you never met all wanting you to take them out at your expense your gas your dog because everyone wants to shoot a cat they will hound you to take them for free are you prepared for all the user's and posers i hope so
no I'm just kidding it is addictive but and i love it good luck if you start here is a pic of my first one with my dog that got me so hooked just to get you started good luck Larry just another stupid cat hunter

Actually there is a chance of ya getting your 1 dog whipped-off big bobcat or even killed on lynxx cat cause they might find out its just 1 dog and stop runnen and a 50 lb and bigger lynxx cat could just bow up and kill a single hownd if the dog don`t escape ! A mtn lion is an oppertunist and can run and tree up from most any hound with a yappy mouth or high clear hound mouth. However not withstanding if the hunter don`t come along andit turns day time and that cat gets too not being human learry/he starts viewing that dog under the tree allby its lonesome, as a potential mealan ! It can and has happened .

Running bobcats with one dog
I am with Mike. If you consistently catch bobcats while hunting dry land with only one dog, please don't tell me. I am hunting four potlickers and a bobcat can make all of them look like a fool about as often as not. If I have a little moisture and not too much wind, my dogs look a little smarter.
I really see a little more team work when I am trailing a cat and dogs must honor and work with each other. I don't want one of the independent coon dogs that the competition hunters always brag about.

i was always told get it done with one before you start another, but 2 at most we all know what the third dog is smelling, lol #2 south 40,lolcats are tricky, and some times 2 dogs are too many,if they get stumped and have to cast about, alot of times the second dog is just tracking up the place. the best races i've had were beind Big Fat Fannie by her self

listen too the origional question as presented
oregon perk wrote:What I would like to know is how are your other dogs ever going to learn anything when you just turn one or two loose,I thought a race was 4or 5 of something trying to be first.
The man asked about just 1 dog !? That could mean he is considering putting all his money in just 1 dog and thats what he will be hunting only ! Or, he has a young hound he is considering hunting on cat SOLO and so asked it on a forum question !? Or, maybe he hurd about a perticular hound who is run solo on cat and he questions if its the truth and isleaveing it up too everyone too put in their 2 cents on it ?! But its notabout any thing but 1 dog .Manning up is hard I supose, cause there has been a few knowledgable cat hunters come on and hedged bout their answers either out of respect too someone else who will claim the have and hunt a hond like that and also because it seams unreasonable too work out for the dog, but it might could. However they don`t want too say yes or now about the subject !
I will say one last time guy : Yes it could be a death sentance on just 1 dog, and yes it could be the quickest way too get him run and caught by a big dominate 35 lber too lynxx cat 60 lber and if he lived from it/ you can believe it took all his desire too do anything but bugger bark from far back if he wastoo run another one again for ya.
On the other hand I can say from experience in 50 yrs of hunten I have only ran one dog (solo) and he did just fine on coon,2 bobcats, 4 bear and a few long tail casts! He treed em all most allways and he must of just been lucky and he did it from 2 yrs 1/4 through 3 yrs 1/2 yrs of age for me . I left Tn. and flew out too Wa. and left the dog with Ross & Chester and Jim and wished I hadn`t now . BUT THAT WAS JUST 1 DOG ON ONE LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE FOR ME, OVER A YR> TIME IN HUNTING !
