Need advice?

Post by elkhntr09 »

Hey im new to Hounds and Hound hunting never have done it. But am wanting to get into it. Im from oregon and looking for houndsman or breeders that have pups for sale near oregon? Wondering what breed of dog is best for rig hunting and what not. I was either thinking Blue tick or walker Hounds? Also I know it takes alot of time and patiences to train pups would it be best to just buy one pup and spend quality time training him/her then the next year get another and slowly build a small pack of hounds that way? I also want a hound that in the off season is a good companian that is good with kids and what not. any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks for your help!!

Oregon is pretty big area you might size it down some. There are three different geo systems here. Coastal, desert and snow timber country. Hunting can vary in each area. What town or part of the state your from will help.

B&Thounds, and Elkhntr, it is really good to see some young guys wanting to get into bobcat hunting. Some of the great ones have died, and will keep on dying. We need some replacements. I cant recomend that you get into bobcat hunting unless there is pretty much nothing else you want to do with your life. If you want to have great dogs and be good at it, it will require more than most of us can give.

I strongly suggest you do what ever it takes to find someone that will take you hunting before you go buying even one little puppy or dog. Even if you have to travel to a different state to minimize the threat of competition, go there. It will save you tons of time and money in the long run. Even if the only way to get some one to take you is to hire them as a guide, do it.

Then, when you see some dogs do it successfully, try to get some of the same stock.

You guys need to go to the West Coast Bobcat Hunters Gathering which is coming up the weekend of fathers day. If you really want to do this thing, get there at all costs! It is not looking like I get to be there this year, but YOU NEED TO BE! This may sound a little extreme, but if you don't have the resources to be at that gathering you probably don't have the resources to get into bobcat hunting with dogs.

B&Thounds, I see you are from Maine. The Oklahoma gathering would be closer for you but I think it is starting today. Find some one in Maine to take you bobcat hunting before you buy a dog. There are bobcat hunting guides in Maine like Mr. Cole. Pay him or some one like him to take you out.

If you are strong enough, stay away from bobcat hunting. If you are weak like the rest of us, you will have to do it. Don't even fight it.

I have trapped bobcats for the last 3 years and have had a blast tons if work but heck any way to have an excuse to get in the woods I'll take the work load.. I am wanting to get into running cats with hounds for something new to do with the family I have had labs befor and it was a blast to train them. I have no problem with the work of training dogs it's fun and a learning experience.. To me running coons isn't fun to me like bobcats would be jmo. I have heard bobcats is the hardest to hunt but I am willing to learn and work at it.. How do I find out when and were the west coast bobcat hunters gathering is? And what is it all about I am more then willing to go to things like this.. Does it cost ect. Thanks for all your help.

In my opinion, bobcat hunting really is not a great family sport. It is too difficult for wives or little kids and they burn out real fast. Of course there are exceptions, and some might come back to it eventually, but these are rare.

The gathering is in Myrtle Point, OR. If you go there the weekend of fathers day and ask around at the hotel you will find it.
It will be your best chance to meet some top hunters. They are not that easy to find otherwise.

Thanks for your help the family part I was more along the lines of my wife a kid likes to go with me they prolly wouldn't get out and hike with me until my son is older but they would essentially drive roads and pick me up at the closest road so I would have to back track so far back to the truck.. Prolly sounds a little lazy to most but to me seems smart lol faster time to the truck more time to catch more cats in my opinion.

David gave you some great advice. Go to the gathering. Find a old bobcat hunter that will take you along. If you want to be a bobcat hunter I recommend going with someone that only hunts bobcats. Hunt with several before you chose a dog or pup. I hunt that area some and would take you along without dogs for the time being. PM me. Some of us old hunters need younger legs at times. Dewey
