Re: kemmer cur on big game
I really like mine. She is a 2 year old female. Fast, gritty, pretty good nose, open trailing...so far does not stick to really tough trails yet however. Handles great. Really just hunts like a hound. Also had a Catahoula/Kemmer that was just supposed to be a hog dog but was a good all round tree dog as well. As with all breeds there are some that are outstanding and some that aren't worth feeding!
Re: kemmer cur on big game
like most all breeds, they have pluses and minuses.depends on what you like in a hunting dog. kemmers are smarter than most people I know and if you try to train them like a hound you will wind up with a close hunting pack dog. most hound guys don't care for a young dog to leave the road unless it has a track. if it does it could mean they are trying to mess with off game and they get called back or scolded. all the kemmers I have messed with have a natural style of hunting wide often leaving the road testing the wind. I ruined the first few by controlling them back because they had their heads high while leaving indicating deer or yotie but in reality they were hunting the wind. now I let them develop on their own and they start a lot of tracks way off the road. in fact most tracks they start are up wind from the road. when I used to scold them i was actually breaking them or at least setting them back. I have seen a lot of them pull the plug on a hard long race if they fall too far behind. I will hunt the ones I have now with any pack of hounds and expect them to contribute to the race {except with jc padgets pack in the coast range.} but before you fault them for not being able to hang on a long race with jc, go run with him and let me know how youre dogs did in that situation. I do have one that will stay hooked even if he gets behind but he is not typical for the breed. none of the kemmers I have will quit a race when ran together.they normally catch what they start.....I could go on all day! lol
no mater if you think you can or you think you cant,, you are probably rite.

I have caught lion, bear, hogs, yotes, bobcat andcoons with mine. Most of my buddies that hunt big game that have hounds have one of mine .It is great to have a dog that I can decoy a yote today and catch a bear from the the next day. There are lines that are better at trailing older tracks and lines that are fast and gritty. Some are silent some open with a chop and some with a bawl. Most are great tree dogs.

One of the best lion and bear dogs I ever owned was a small Kemmer male.
