Better question what qualifies as an old timer? lol
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

well thats an easy one. it all depends on how old of person your asking. example a five year old can't imagine someone really being twenty six years old. but i guess once your about the only one left thats been doing what your doing for any where close to the amount of time you have you might as well consider yourself a oldtimer. or just lonely i dunno.

a dog man is someone that don't buy a new truck to impress his peers, don't buy a fancy box to impress his peers, don't keep dogs just to impress his peers. a dog man is someone that raises, trains, and finishes a pak of dogs that consistently tree the game he hunts.whether he is hunting alone or with somebody. when you accomplish these things you will be a dogman or as you say, "old timer" and you can hold you're head high in any company.....just my opinion
no mater if you think you can or you think you cant,, you are probably rite.

The first year you ruin $20.000.00 worth of dogs.
The second year you ruin $15,000.00 worth of dogs.
The third year, you ruin $10,000.00 worth of dogs.
The fourth year you ruin $5,000.00 worth of dogs.
The fifth year you only ruin $2,500.00 worth of dogs.
The sixth year, you start listening to what the OLDTIMERS were telling you at the start and then you'll be on your way to being a good houndman or you can start out by buying $52,500.00 worth of dogs but you'll only be a guy with good dogs and they won't be for very long. Either way its going to cost you the same money
IMHO, there is only one way to make a good hound man and that's "EXPERIENCE THE HARDWAY".
I can make 'em go and I can make 'em Whoa !
God makes 'em do.
I'll take Jesus, you can have the field

To me a good houndsmen is a person who has good hounds, knows how to raise and train a good hound and who realizes you don't have to kill everything you tree to make a good hound .Also he'll try to teach this to the young houndsmen that a good hunter is also a conservationist.

A good houndsmen is one because its just "what he does", not because it is something he "wants to be".

Watch a 10 year old who has been tagging along since he could walk verses a newbie adult and you will see the 10 year old "just is" and the newbie "wants to be".

To be politically correct I should say "he/she". I am hoping my boys grow up to meet a nice "houndswoman" someday. Cuts down on the "your going hunting again" and the "not another dog" arguments.

Shade,
A lot of houndmen do that,including myself,but i'm not sure that's a good quality.
There's something in our blood that calls us to hunt.It can be like an addiction or an obsession.
When we're standing on a mountain top, listening to our dogs build a fire under a varmint you can get kind of a high from it.That's why we have to go again the next day to feed that addiction.
If you start out hunting hounds at a young age it usually takes a major catastrophe to cause you to quit and even then the addiction remains !

In my opinion a good houndsmen is anyone who takes the best care he can afford of his hounds, enjoys hearing a dog work, gives credit to any dog who does a good job, regardless who the dogs owner is. It makes no difference if he bought the dog or trained it himself, some good dog men do not have the time to train their own hounds. New pickups & fancy box boxes do not make one a true houndsman, but it sure does not make them a bad houndsmen. Just makes me glad one can afford those luxuries & most of the time those hunters have worked hard to earn them. Al
