Goodman hound

Does any one have any info on goodman hounds? I heard they are even faster than July's. but just wondering what they're like, I know it varies from dog to dog, but just wondering what the average dog is like

You are lucky to live in OK if you are interested in "Goodman" Hounds as some of the last Good ones were bred by an older Gentleman around Sweetwater. He ran his Hounds "Outside" after Grey Fox and Bobcat.

The Goodman Hound was a Strain of Hounds developed from the July (why you find some Merle coloration in Goodmans), Running Walker, and Coldblooded farm dogs. These Hounds were bred as "Varmint" Hounds to be excellent Trail, Jump, and Tree Hounds. Grey Fox were the primary Game they were Bred for, with Bobcat a close second. Yet the Goodman had enough Brains to adopt a "Heads Up" Style to do well after Red Fox.

As the Coyote encroached on traditional Fox Country some Goodman Hound owners adjusted their Breeding requirements for different Skill Sets and later day (mid 1960s through the late 1990s) Goodman hounds were adequate Coyote Hounds.

Faster than Julys.....maybe an individual Goodman might be "Faster" than an Average July....however this, "Speed" was not the Skill Set that the Goodman was noted for. Rather their Nose, Brains, Toughness and adaptability were the Traits that made the Goodmans the Breed/Strain of choice for some Good Houndsmen

I had a couple 3/4 goodman 1/4 running walker jips that were probably the toughest pair of dogs I ever had. They had bottom to them and they had no quit buttons on them. Average speed but could really drive a fox/coyote or deer. I lost one of them in the summer running one night. This was before I had collars. 3 weeks later she came home missing her back leg. Didn't slow her down much. Hard headedness and toughness killed those jips before they could get too old. I would take a train load just like them If I knew where some were.
