Jerry Spech of Wahaoo Nebraska has produced some good hounds.(blueticks)_ would bet ol Jerry will show you his hounds in the timber.
Keep the cash in your pocket until you are reasonable sure that what you pick will be good in the woods.
Pups are always a little bit of a gamble but hunt with the mother...and sire if possible.

I am not your dad, but if I was, and knowing what I know, I would not let you buy a dog until you found someone to go hunting with. Find a top hunter with a good reputation. Hunt with him a few times so you know what a good dog is, and can observe a good handler. And if you come to trust him, and he comes to like you, try to buy something from him, or on his recommendation.

You live in a region with a good population of coon hunters. You are only a few miles from Missouri, which might be called the coon hunters capital of the world. Iowa is a stones throw away, and that state is plumb full of great coon dogs. Your own state has plenty of them as well. I know if you will do your due diligence, you will find a good hunter that will let you come out with him. Going to a competition hunt as a spectator might be a good idea.

You have no idea how much frustration, trouble and money this advice will save you if you will take it.

I don't really expect you to take it because you will probably have to learn the hard way like the rest of us did.

I know you will have fun and learn a lot however you decide to go. Make sure you keep us up to date on what you are doing!

Thankyou so much for the advice, on my farm I throw hay bales for, they have a massive coon population and a guy runs walkers on their property, I am planning to meet him and hunt with him this fall, maybe even take my hound late February if I can get a pup here in the next two months

I've got a real nice male pup here. Give me a call if you're interested and we can work something out. He comes from good blood and his dad and half brother are the two best dogs I've owned. He will make a nice dog. I've been breeding these dogs for 18 years and I've messed with a pup or two out of this stuff. This is a real good acting and we'll built pup. I've never hunted my dogs on squirrel but they've caught me plenty of lion, bobcat, and coon. If I wanted them to tree squirrel they would.

Hey man, not sure if your still looking for a red dog, if you are I would recommend you take the advice from David and also purchase John Wick's "Walk With Wick" for a go-to that will save you alot of time money and mistakes. Then I would point you in the direction of Buck Ratliffe in Dublin, Virginia. Tom Solberg and him have a phenominal breeding program. They are T-top line straight from "rat & raven" "rabble rouser". I have 2 of these dogs and not only are they wonderful hunting dogs but great with the family. If you give them the opportunity, their breeding will do the rest. I live across the country and didn't think twice about flying out to get my second pup. He is a dandy. Pup will cost aroud 350 or so. You will not be disappointed. Google diamondridge redbones. Northwoods where are you located in Montana and what are your dog's out of? Mine all have a lot of T-top blood. Are you the guy That got a Moose x Liene pup?

Kevin, I took a job in Portland and now live in Washington. I did live in Lolo outside of Missoula and then in eastern Montana "Colstrip". My pup (now 11 months) is out of Moose & Bonnie Anne. He is smart and fast. Like Wick said, "find the breeder, you'll find the dog" Buck is as good as an ol' boy gets. I will be in Montana this winter for lion season. I wish I would have known you were there before I left. It always seems like when I leave a place there are many hounders there that I could not find when I lived there. Must be that secret world of hound hunting thing. LOL I'm sure your dogs are something to behold and I would love to see them sometime!

Joel, I'm from Monarch. Just moved to Bridger though. My Sage dog came from Buck's buddy Pastor Mike. Think they are pretty good folks. What's the Bonnie Anne dog out of? I mostly hunt alone so a lot of folks don't know me. A few do if you ask around. My dogs are just dogs but they do a nice job for me. Found something I liked and have stuck with breeding my own since I started 18 years ago. I've tried a lot of different dogs of different breeds over that time and haven't found anything that suits me as good. Just made a cross the other day that I'm pretty excited about. Been waiting a couple years to prove the female out. She's making a nice young dog and just turned two. I bred her to her uncle and he's a real nice hound. One of the best I've owned. They should be some good pups. They'll have as much or more of the Rat x Raven blood as anything in the country that I know of.

Forgot to answer your question about Bonnie Anne. She is out of Gr ntech Dark Timber spook who is full of rat x raven blood. Dam is Gr ntech Red Penny who is of outlaw Razor Red. Yes Pastor Mike and the Virginia cartel boys are very good people! When I went to Virginia to pick up my little Moose, Buck wouldn't let me stay anywhere but at his house and invited me and the family to come back anytime to visit and hunt the dogs. Very good folks, and honest as well!

My buddy had Spook's dad Rebel out here most of his life. Rebel was a real nice hound. Spent a lot of nights in the woods with him. The male pup I had for sale was out of my Billy dog and a female that was line bred on Razor Red. Billy is out of Rebel's brother Boomer and my Belle female. Belle's dad was a half brother to Rebel and Boomer.
