Garmin Collar Repair/Fix

Post by Hounder- »

I have two DC30 collars that only get ~200 or less range. Constantly lose signal, sometimes are moving "?" marks. Sometimes they pick up satellites and show battery etc. in the "status" screen but won't pop up on map. They are updated and have had their batteries detached and re-set. So I think they are cooked. Both have after market day-glos installed.

I am just wondering what everyone has been doing with their broken collars? Can I send them back to garmin for repair? They are well past warranty and have day-glos. Would garmin still repair them for $90? And garmins repair means I would just get two refurbished dc40s back, right?

Or should I just buy new?

Thanks for the help.

Not sure what collar they'd send you back. But if you go that route take your dayglo collars off and put the stock ones back on or you won't get them back (and long range antenna if they are on the collar).

I've had collars acting goofy with the moving ? and not tracking and bought the whole replacement collar ( http://www.dusupply.com/garmin-replacem ... -dc30.html) and this cured my issues. All a guy really needs is the replacement gps module but Buddy hasn't talked Garmin into selling just that by itself yet..
But if that isn't the issue you are out the $50 or whatever it would end up for the replacement collar too.

Thanks for the reply, had no idea one could buy that replacement GPS module from Buddy. Might give it a shot, if it doesn't work I can give to a buddy that is having collar problems.

Thanks much!

Hope training season is treating ya well.

Check your antenna. I had some doing the same thing, it was a bad antenna. Made some antennas out of coated aircraft cable, solved the problem and got farther range than the originals ever got. The original antennas on the Garmin's are cheap, the wire inside breaks. Garmin makes a fortune repairing broke collars by replacing the antennas.

Turned out it was the antennas. Night and day difference with the collars. $11 fix is a lot better than $90 one.

Just figured I'd let people know if they run into a similar problem.
