Question for you experienced lion hunters

I'm thinking of buying a dog that is very well started on lions. However where I hunt there are no lions. What are the chances of it taking a bobcat track ?

My dogs are all started on lion before they go on bobcats. I would say there is a 100% chance the a started lion dog will run a bobcat.

If you're not going to hunt lion I would suggest buying a bobcat dog instead. Lion dogs will run Bobcats but a true Bobcat dog will be much better.

Ran my dog on a lynx two nights ago.
Never saw a lynx or a lynx track for that matter prior.
He treed it, so im going to say yes.

If you want to chase bobcats that dog will more then likely run them. What I have found is they all don't catch them. I like to start my pups on house cat and training sent. That makes training in the field easer .

I hunt both but there is a difference in what makes a top hound on either so see if the hound hunts as you want whether its lion or bobcat. And remember different areas do call for different styles of hound with some cross over but not a lot. And lion and bobcat scent behave much differently in some conditions. Here a decent day for lion tracks may burn a bobcat. Track faster then you can trail it. I think lions have a larger number of heavy scent molecules that can hang around awhile. But bobcat scent is more fleeting in some conditions. If you hunt where there's better humidity and lower temps I believe the two scents act more alike. But not being a hound myself I may be wrong. Good luck n hunt it in your country first.

I don't own any of those mythical bobcat dogs, but my lion dogs will sure catch me plenty of bobcats.

Stay away from track straddler lion hounds and you should be ok.

Not really......maybe in the snow or on a jumped track. Not from start to finish in the SW on dirt with annual precip. of 8 inches and less. Sorry to disagree with you.

Houndswoman, What makes you say that? I have never hunted the desert so not speaking with any opinion's just wanting to hear why you think that?

On true dry ground you need a dog that will slow down and work track to track they can't fly down a track like you do in the snow

Have never hunted any sort of desert with hounds for Bobcat hoping to do some this next season. Dog's have been coast to coast and done well so going to have to see what they can do in the Desert. Probably get skunked but we'll see.
