Wildlife 3190/3280 Magnum convertible. Long range, light weight, and changeable battery. Being able to change you own batteries is the way to go. Always fresh if you have any doubts.

Quick Track QTR series mounted on 3 element.
One hand operation and easy to carry. Sensitive. 3 position switch to help calculate distance.

I'm not knocking any other set ups, this is just the best combo I found.

I have used, or seen used, about everything out there. For me Marshall is the best, hands down, for a lot of reasons. I have a Yaesu VR-500 receiver and it will track any frequency, but, they are not manufactured anymore. A shame because it has worked very well for many years. Back before we went to GPS, and often with 5 or 6 hunters and 15+ dogs along, mine was the only receiver used all day.

For collars I like marshalls first and then Johnsons. If you're a little low on cash you can usually find them reasonable.

For receivers it's tough to beat the old wildlife 1000 blue box especially from the truck. In our area though I preferred the tracker 5000 cause i always had it with me. I still have the one with the long range antenna attachment. Can hook up a yagi if the dog gets way out.

Course all that stuff usually sits in the bag now with garmin. Whatever you use it's more important to be familiar with it and know how to use it. Reading telemetry is a skill that takes a lot of time to hone.
