HighlandHounds wrote:Id go with a good purpose bred lurcher, as Steve said a bull x would fit the bill, but you may want to lean further towards the staghound, like 3/4 stag or more, if your running big open land plough or prairie. But for smaller fields you often get closer slips, so a half bred is fine.

Heres an old half bull that I owned and worked all over Europe, was a great dog for hunting, had a fantastic nose, and an even greater will to get out there and put it to good use. He worked alone a lot, and could do the job from start to finish over rough open land, needed no help, no hounds, but he would hark in to hounds speaking.

Heres a couple of pictures of him as a keen young dog in his first season of work, ive got just hundreds of great memories of this dog in the field.

I agree with Highland. Staghounds are the way to go. By the way Highland that is a beautiful dog.

What did you end up going with?

sorry KY boy I raise my dogs around and in forests so they grow up learning what obstacles are before they can run to fast and do them selves real damage, lurchers should not be confused with hot blood greyhounds that are breed and raised to run as fast as they can in safe conditions. a good lurcher possess the ability to a just its speed in different situations allowing them to be able to follow fast game through the forest then put the foot down to make a catch when the forest opens up.
