dog for calling game

i saw this on the internet one night and wanted to know if anyone has head of this there was a guy saying he had two dogs that want with him on game drives and when he was setting for game calling or hunting over bait the dog job was to lay beside the man and let him know when game was coming in and which way it was coming and to do blood work after the kill has anyone heard of dogs be used like that

Yes, we used bluetick/airdale crosses for this game and they were great. We started with an airdale female and found that she did not have enough nose to trail a crippled cat or coyote. So when we crossed with a bluetick found that we had what we wanted. Adequate nose and a ton of grit and they would give a little mouth on track.
I think a hound has much more nose than needed for this application and not quite as gritty as the airdale. Of course, the airdale has 10 ply skin which comes in handy when they jump on a coyote or bobcat with a lot of life.

when you set up on a call and had one coming in how did the dog let you know did they make nose or just by looking

They would sit on their butt and lock onto any movement, when they knew it was a coyote or other predator would whine softly.

that must have been a cool dog you had just one thing I would wonder how did you keep the dog from going after the game I have had blueticks before and they would want to run anything they find down

Snapped them on a short cotton rope tied to my waist. We also had shock collars on them if needed.

just a two more ? who did you get them just to whine instead of braking there head off and I know dogs are used to decoy coyote sometimes but with other predator like bobcats and fox I would think a dog as big as something like a bluetick x would scare them off have you ever had any trouble with that

If they barked, we disciplined them by jerking the lead or Tritronics. No the size of the dog never seemed to intimidate the coyotes. We did notice that coyotes would intentionally give their wind to the dogs, as if to say is it okay if I come on in?

so did you just take the dog out with you until he picked it up or did you work with it before you take it out
