Eastern Oklahoma trailing?

Post by brycejohnson »

Somebody else please tell me they have had trouble trailing this week. I have been treeing a bunch of coon the last few weeks and my pups crave it. I took a trip to eastern Oklahoma yesterday and did nothing but struggle. Twice in the same night about 15 miles apart coon crossed the road in front of me and I put the hounds down and once they didn't even know it had been there and the next time they trailed maybe 50 yards and lost it. They acted like the track was a week old. Also in central Oklahoma a friend has been struggling bad too. He also has nice hounds and treed 7 singles in one night two weeks ago, but says his hounds couldn't trail at all this week. By looking at the ground its nice and green and moist and I wouldn't dream of this ever happening. Bash on my hounds and call me crazy all you want I know I am hunting nice stuff. But this week has left me scratching my head. Anybody else ever experience this?

That's the mystery of the ever changing scenting conditions. This time of year Eastern Oklahoma has terrible tree and plant pollen among other things that cause trailing conditions to change. You may go tonight and the dogs may be able to run every track like they are tied to it.

Trailing conditions have been good down here in early mornings, a little dew and wind has not been too bad.
Adios,

I have given up on trying to figure it out. Do we think for some reason the scent just plainly doesn't stick? Because you can't get any fresher then a few seconds to a few minute old track.

Mike, head this way with those cold nose black dogs and if they run tracks mine can't smell Ill pay half your gas. haha
