Funstuff,
I am curious why you would acquire an abused dog? If you know it was abused, surely you can track down where it came from.

Some dogs are born timid. Over the last several years I ran 2 very timid dogs for friends that it took a week for me to get them to trust me.

Funstuff took him because a good handler can fix what someone elses stupidity has done. Last I talked with him dog had caught a few cats already. Andy

Might not be the original owner's fault.

My dad bought a little mule one time when I was about 10-12. He worked and worked with that little mule, never could get him right. I stayed in trouble for not attending school. After he would whip the shit out of me for it, I would beat the piss out of that mule. He never knew it.
