Yes Mule Man, I've taken hunt out of running walkers with training collar but haven't ruined one yet, thought I did but they came around, just keep taking em and they should come back around, but when they started back to hunting I layed off the button for several trips, didn't even tone, not even to call them in, just caught them up the way we did for years.
ive run deer hounds my whole life, run some today, cold trailing from track to track hounds trail the scent glands southernfox spoke of, but most dogs when track heats up starts smelling more on the bushes and once they jump it they are smelling the whole deer. The electric fence wrapped around the deer leg sounds like a good method, I've never tried it but have some deer legs in my freezer to try it with my next litter of pups.

Re: Deer breaking with scent pad
Iv experienced the same thing you are describing scrub. Iv had them to do nothing but stand in the road and look at the grill of the truck for seems like forever before starting back and guess what they started back on(deer)!!!!!! Iv had some road broke on deer but would jump and runone after they left the road. Had deer run across the road and them watching the deer but wouldn't take cause they knew what was up. Travel 10 min down road, start a good track that I could see print in road, dogs pack up and start working pretty good. Have a long out and bam, the dog that turned the deer down crossing the road jumps a deer and the race is on . There has got to be a better way.

One thing you might try, lay that dog up for an extended time. Another that might work tie him to a deer, get out of sight & work him over with ecollar. If this doesn/t work, tough decision but I would get a new prospect. There are some that are very hard to deer break, especially if they have formed a habit of running a deer once out of your sight. However, if you have a hot ecollar & tracking collar on every dog hard for them to get away with deer running. If you are going to get a dog like that broke it is going to take being very constant, every time he breaks on deer burn him up all the way back to you. This dog must have some very good qualities or I asume you would have already culled him. I agree with scrubrunner, have never ruined a dog with harsh use of the ecollar if they are as hard headed as that dog is. Have had a few stop hunting for awhile but always got over it. Never hunted where it was legal to run deer with dogs, can see where it could be more difficult to break dogs if one was running where other hunters are running deer with dogs. Will be important to get this dog on desired game in between these harsh breaking sessions.I am better at sharing my experience with other than hunting now days. Good luck. Al

Wish I was closer to you Mule Man, I could use another good deer dog.
You need a good broke dog you trust that will tell on em, you can watch the garmin if you have one on all the dogs, if it checks em out and don't join in, light em up.
Dog needs a lot of long races on good game, if you are running fox and cat I would take dog to a fox pen several times, if you are trying to run cats only I think it's going to be hard since it's already running deer that bad.
I haven't had a problem breaking my fox/cat dogs from running deer but can't stop them from catching possums and skunks that they come up on in the road. Don't mess the hunt up but a minute or two though unlike a deer race messing the whole hunt up, the smell is bad with the skunks but with the possums, well you never know with the way things are going, a dog that will catch a good fat possum may be a great asset to possess one day.

The only 100% way I've found to brake a dog off of deer is to raise a deer with them. I will guarantee your dog will never even look at a deer again. It's just part of the pack now. If you can't have a wild deer in your state, you can use fallow deer or maybe some other exotic. Or become a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for your state so you can have a wild deer.
We just turned out on a pair of lions on Sunday. Had 5 dogs, all between 1-2 years old. We didn't see the herd of elk when we turned out but they were now standing on top of the lion tracks. As the dogs approached the herd, the elk scattered in three directions. The dogs all made it through the elk and we caught both cats. I haven't messed with scents or an ecollar for years. Or any other type of deer braking voodoo methods out there.
If you look at the picture I posted earlier in this thread. That is a wild deer that was walking through my yard while the dogs were out of their run. They didn't even look at it.

Re: Deer breaking with scent pad
I decided yesterday what will cure my problem. I'm going to buy a small generator, a 6 cup stainless percolator,a pound of dark roast forgers, comfortable lawn chair and listen to them run things.
