question on deer breaking

Post by perky »

so im workin on breaking a couple dogs and i'm at the point where i can walk them into a hot deer track with them runnin loose and they will not run it. but they will sniff at it which then i shock em but not as bad as if they were actually runnin a deer. and my question is should i still keep doing on what im doin until they won't acknowledge it at all. i mean after that first shock i'll walk him around and then take back into a different section they were hangin out at and as soon as he gets bout 30 yards from where the trail is he'll stop with his tail between his legs and stand there. but the first time i shock him when he drops his nose.

Normally only takes me one or two times and I don't worry about it again. I am pretty harsh though when I do it those couple of times. I make sure they know what good game is first however.

My dogs always drop there noses to deer tracks then leave it alone once they realize what it is...as long he is not opening up and running deer tracks I would say you are ok...if hes on it for more than a 15 yds or so, then remind him. Especially with older deer tracks, he might have to sniff a bit to realize what it is. If he opens up, really shock him and hold it for 5 seconds or so, but it sounds like you are past this already.

Why are you shocking your dog when he is smelling a track, isn't that what he is supposed to be doing? If you're shocking him when he puts his head down to sniff the track, all you're doing is teaching him to not smell a track. Dogs don't comprehend or understand situations like we do. So try to think how your dogs are thinking when working them. They are very simple minded which is why he could become very confused at what you're trying to teach him when you're encouraging him to smell a track then shocking him for doing just that. Let him smell every track, only correct him if he gets too interested in that track once he has time to realize what kind of track it is.

Sounds like you are good to go. Get them back on some good game. If they do start a deer again shock ... but I would not over do it if its just tracks, could be good game mixed in so make sure before you lite them up.

There can be a very fine line with dogs and from what you write it sounds like you are close to making your dog scared to run a track across a deer track. They should be able to trail across and past deer and not come back with tail tucked if they wind or see a deer.

getting them on the right game like was already said is very important training cant be all negative. a hound can be weakest to run trash when another hound is trashing i have found if you can shock them when another hound runs trash if they join in it really helps sink in that this is not the game to be chasing no matter what.

i do NOT encourage them in any way too smell the hot deer track i have them runnin loose and just walk with them towards it too see how they react. good news is i walked my walker too where i jumped a beded down buck was. he got 20 yards too the bed got a whiff and walked back to the road and i didnt have a shock collar on him then. now just working on my 11 month old but being slightly milder. my walker isn't nervous though after that took him too creek and he walked it just like he was huntin while i stayed at the field.

I have one dog that's completely deer broke but he loves smelling a deer track or any other track for that matter but he won't pursue trash, no harm done in smelling

What your doing is teaching him to be scared of smelling a deer, not breaking him from running them. There's a difference. Now what happens is when he is on good game, and a deer comes across the track or he trails up to a deer kill, then he remembers all those times he was shocked for just smelling deer, instead of continuing on, he's going to get scared and quit. Better get him on a pile of good game and only shock him when he is actually being EXCITED or RUNNING deer.

I wont shock a dog off of trash until they get put on a pile of good game . i even let them run trash as puppy . but when i start the breaking process i light them up all the way until they are at my feet then scald them maybe Pull an ear to. Then i get them on good game and i praise them and pet them up real good. Some dogs are softer than others so you just have to work them a little different but basically the same just not as harsh . i never shock them for smelling a trash track i will if they try to pursue it. I Later set them up with someones trash dogs or another young dog that is trashy and fry them for chasing with another dog this process when done correctly developes a very broke dog and even turns them into tadle tales also. It works well for me. Let me add i do this while roading walk hunting or on horse back .

I had a buddy, he had the best dog i have ever personally seen on hogs, well he could turn his out and he would hunt all day and all night, but when he smelt a hot deer track he would come running to your feet lay down, and if he told him its "ok" go find a hog , he would go as far as it took to strike a hog... That dogs name was OBAMA, dad to my plott pup im working with now.. Very few like him... Not all dogs can handle all that shocking you gone have to dog to get them broke, one with sense can.. My bmc ran a deer the other day, shocked him on 18 continous for at least 6 seconds with alpha, he started barking and jumping, hes been shocked before so he will be fine tomorrow, hejust wont do it again(run a deer) at least not tomorrow.. Some wont hunt the day after u shock them hard, depends on the dog, how his mentality is, that bmc probably wont hunt out 600 yards like normal tomorrow, but it wont ruin him... A good dog is one you know WILL-NOT run trash, ive had the chance and honor to own 2-3 that caliber.. Then i have them puppies, like ur talking about @justhunter i have pups off the Obama dog that will run the hair off a deer, they just gone need tuning up, i use them as help dogs for 4 -5 months, get them on the game (hogs), and then once feel comfortable shocking i will (SO DONT BREAK SPIRIT) ..

A dog that cowards down is not a deer broke dog it is a abused dog. If you tone train a dog and have the basic come down there is not need to be abusive in trying to deer break a dog. If you see a deer and let your dog out to check it, aren't you just asking him to run it so you can shock him. That is about you not training your dog. Think about it. Dewey
