gundogs x bulls

Post by hillbilly boy »

hey you all hoping maybe some of you all could give me some input what I think mit be the best dog if what I have been looking for i have be thinking about getting into fur hunting and trapping and what would need the dog to do is work the trap line finding the ones that drag the traps off and finding dens when i am call hunting to let me know when the game is coming and to do blood work and last for shed hunting

i am thinking the gundog x bull would be a good one because the gundog would give a prett good tracking blood and the bull would give the blood to stop anything it got to

Why go to all that trouble , Go get a MT. Cur or BMC that is being breed already for that kind of hunting.

Their are a whole bunch of breeds that already exist that excel at what you are wanting. Airedales, curs, drahthaars, catahoulas, German short hairs, blue lacys, German wire hairs, and a lot of the collie breeds work well too. That's a few off the top of my head that would excel at the qualities your looking for, and I'm sure their are many more. Good luck and hope that helps.

I've done a lot of what you list with a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Labs too. They are companion dogs/gun dogs that are easily trained and won't blow out after game simply for the chase. Just a thought.

Have had a lot of bull dog mixes for hog hunting and they are not what you would want for fur harvesting. Get anyone of the strains of cur dogs and you will be good to go or train a bird dog that wont leave out when you release it.

Based on what you are wanting one for, I would say a good cat or bmc would do the trick as they can be trained to do bout anything. They are bred to be stock dogs and farm dogs. They can hunt, work cattle, and anything else you are patient enough to train them to do. Either type of pointer wouldn't be a bad choice either imo. Good luck in your search, let us know what you end up going with.

German short-haired pointers are often used for blood tracking, alot of them are trained to hunt sheds with great success. There is a book on the market about training dogs to hunt shed, I don't remember what it was but I think I saw it on F&t. Have seen some gsp crossed with hounds that excelled in running game as well.

Well if its in a trap you just need a locator not a kill dog. Fox hides aren't that tuff anyway. Any decent hunting breed will probably work. Terriers some staghounds. The cur breeds the more multi purpose gun dogs think German or southern European not English their dogs are more specialist. A pure hound probably wouldn't do all you want.

You want a bay dog that wont get too rough. You don't want them engaging unless just to stop it from running away. Hence the reason the good bay dogs work cuz most of them will hammer something running away to get it to turn.

I think for what you want, you should stick with either a catahoula, BMC, blue lacy, or Airedale. All these breeds are multi- purpose, smart(trainable), and excell at the disciplines you want in a dog. Plus any one of these dog breeds will stop the animals your trapping and hold their own in shitty situations.

Well as long as you don't get one of them Paris Hilton purse dogs I'd say you and your mutt will be plenty safe.
