Lion hound training
Re: Lion hound training
Don't waist your time with them Barn cats unless you want a Barn Cat dog. I don't bother starting mine till there big enough and mature enough to handle it. I want pups making the whole race from the get go. If you have coons use coons no need to show the dogs just go dump the coon come back in 10-20-30 minutes and let them trail and tree. Simple.
Re: Lion hound training
So when I say caged coon I mean ferel kitty lol some people are really against it there's a guy that has about fifty of um and if I don't come pick them up when he catches them he shoots them. If I can't knock um out of the tree they get a second chance if the dogs get um well... I don't shoot um out. So I'll give u a run down on what I did today I have to 1 year old dogs that have been doing really well. So I got the caged critter and didn't let my dogs know I had it. Drove down the dirt skid road and hung it in a tree. I have been hanging it higher because my older dogs won't tree they will either rip the cage down or just attack the tree. I started at my pick up and went up into the woods dragging diluted national mtn lion scent. Wen about a half mile then down to where the caged critter was. I walked my two older dogs down to where the tracj started and they were getting really worked up. Let them go waited a second then let that pup go. My one year olds still need some work because they went off on something else and that pup worked the track a bit and came back I walked with him up to where I knew I laid my drag he went off and then came back so when I got my dogs all together walked to the tree when my one year olds started greening he started treeing. Took the cat down and leashed my dogs poured about a gallon of water on the critter and let it go. It went up over a hill and out of sigh. The pup was going ape shit. Waited a min and let the pup go he took off searching. I then let my older dogs go they treed the cat and he was still wandering around with his nose down never came to the tree nothing. Any suggestions. Kinda getting discouraged with these older dogs. So what do u mean walk in the woods. Just let them run till they come back or what. I have a GPS on um. What do u guys think
Re: Lion hound training
It's going to be hard to keep your young dogs interested in store bought scent, It smells nothing like the real thing. If you have a Coon season open and plenty of Coon get them on some and leave them Barn Critters alone. Don't worry about how they tree now worry about how they tree the real thing. And when you work a drag you start at the tree and work back towards the starting point other wise your teaching them to back trail. But stay away from drags and Barn critters. That's more for you then the dogs. If coon ain't an option then take a barn critter and just cut it loose with no dogs seeing it walk them across the track 5-10-15 minutes later.
Re: Lion hound training
So coons open year around should I just take them out and dump them in a creek bottom where I know there are coons it sucks because I can't tell what there runnin
Re: Lion hound training
So instead of running any more drags should I just let that cat go and wait a bit
Re: Lion hound training
And could some one explain on just taking them for a walk because my one year olds don't just walk they drag and when i let them go they run for a bout 2 miles chasing god knows what in the mix
Re: Lion hound training
Yes, Just go dump them in a creek where you know there are Coon using the area. Yes no more drags let the critter go and wait. For the walking comment sounds like you need to get a handle on them dogs spend time with them make sure they know what HERE means. Your dogs should hunt for you not you hunt for them. Get a handle on them spend a few days with them just messing around the yard get some hot dogs and play with them. When they got the idea down to come when called take them for a walk up the creek bottoms. Just cut them loose and walk
Re: Lion hound training
Just checked my traps got two big boars think I'll wet them down and let them go
Re: Lion hound training
Plott1357, I am getting the idea you have at least 4 pups/unbroke dogs. I don't even know what to tell you, but without a broke dog to measure what is going on out there you are going to have a three ring circus free casting that many pups.
I wish you had one young dog and one broke dog. Or at most two young ones and one broke one. Then, I would try to find a place in coon habitat where you can run them down the road in front of your rig. You could then watch them and keep control of them and read what they are doing against the broke dog.
Then you are going to have to get those young dogs slowed down on deer. Like Merlo said teach them to come when called. Go out in the day time so you have a good chance of seeing the deer. Call them, and shock them if they take the deer. Then, get them back on some good game.
Forget about your six month pups until you get those other dogs under control and treeing wild coon on their own.
You are a good man. Keep after it.

I name my trapped coons
Re: Lion hound training
They usually do pretty dam good they are both coon crazy and lion crazy. I have three dogs two one year old and a 6 month old. I'm trying a really am I love the shit out of it love seeing these dogs work. And when they tree I feel like a child again. I might be trying to work to many dogs at once. So what would u recommend on these one year old they don't always run foul game. If I throw them in a hit deer track won't do shit shocked them hard on a fresh killed deer. They do pretty well on two mile drags
