Most people sell pups at 7-8 weeks but I have found that waitin till 12-16 weeks you can learn a lot more about which may be the best pups.. I wouldn't worry about sex much. I would worry about getting the best one of the bunch. More or less what 1bludawg is getting at. You will go through dogs even out of high quality crosses it's the name of the game, just do the best you can to tip the odds in your favor. That's all you can do. I agree David, the best trainers all seem to be so "lucky!" Quality of genetics is a limiting factor but quite frankly not as often as the trainer is.

So we all know even the best litters are only going to produce a couple or less great dogs. So Rcwisdom has the most foolproof method, while everyone is not able to use it, it is by far the best way to ensure you get the "pick". One guy has the right idea but how do you sell the left over "pre-culled" 4 month olds? I have picked my share of calls, and kept quite a few average hounds, but top dogs seem to come from weeding out whole litter. The best trainer theory makes some sense for two reasons I can see, he's probably been around a lot of hounds anden possibly has a knack when picking and or has his dogs in the woods enough to make a average hound perform. I don't believe there is much training,just exposure and handling with the top dog pups. When a 3 or 4 month opens on squirrel or turkey or what ever usually good indicator that's the pup to put you time into. I have a small litter of 5 on the ground the stud owner is getting 2 and I will see what becomes of the others. At least if he gets the best it will still be in our group and breeding program. Just remember as I write this i think I have learned somethings over the years,yet I know it is wishful thinking

In my honest opinion, you really don't have to do much with the best dogs. It's just get them in the woods on the desired game with good dogs to start. Once they're ready, take the training wheels off and let them go. Don't hang em out to dry, or beat em down too much physically and have a little luck and you'll enjoy a really good game catcher. And even these will have some holes. The downside is these type are few and far between and we're usually hunting dogs that take a little more massaging to get to work. Not many litters put out all top dogs. We'll unless they are mine and I'm selling you one.
