German bread all around dogs

Post by hillbilly boy »

Was wondering if any of you have any experience hunting with G.S.P or G.W.P from what I have read they were breed to be a bird and game dog both I was talking to a guy that breeds a strain of G.W.P that he regularly hunts coon fox bobcat and coyote with with a good amount of time catching them with no more than two dogs I have no reason to not believe him but dad always told me to be careful with dog breeders so I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the dogs as big game or vermin dogs as well as bird dog

I've only ever bird hunted with Draathars. The guy that had 'em couldn't put 'em in the same box. One of 'em was a little growly with people. I went twice, once on wild grouse, didn't see any. Second time was in a pen. Dog did fair, but the whole thing seemed like shooting a billy goat tied to a tree to me. I will give you a piece of advice for free and it will be worth what you gave for it. A jack of all trades is a master of none. I have found this to be true. You can have one dog to do everything, but with some of the things you do, he will be lacking.

Oh no doubt but the way things are now we can't keep a big pack of specialists dogs like my dad did and from the way I read it the idea of the dogs was instead of a big pack of dogs that are the best at one or two things were to have one or two dogs that were at least ok at most of the things that were needed

I've hunted with them on bird's and those bred for it are great on our desert quail good pheasant dogs and reliable retrievers except they do show it when its pulling ducks out of ice water all day. Given most experience was with hot country dogs taken north. On fur I've seen some do ok. They hunt like some busy walkers. They aren't as cold as I prefer and are more a bay dog then tree dog. But they did tree some but not steady and a couple were bad tree climbers. Some are real gamey some are not so much. But they aren't the best pack dogs naturally but can be made to behave. Which is probably their strength they take training readily

My GWP goes every time I coon, cat or bear hunt. She does a decent job with baying and she will get treed with the other dogs. When I run her with my curs, she will get in and kill coons with them. She does great on upland game and waterfowl to boot.

Ok cool to find a guy that has one for fur hunting did you traine her for it or did she pick it up from the other dogs did you get her going good on birds first and has she ever found a fox or coyote were you would have a idea of how she would do around them I met a guy on another forum that breed them and he regale hunted fox and coyote with them he said that no more than two of them would catch and kill a fox or coyote or have them bayed up just wondering if you could see that being true with what you have seen with yours
