Need Advice!

Post by eskinner45 »

Well I have a guy I know that contacted me about running a lion here in NE. He had a calf kill the game commission came in and killed that lion but gave him a depredation license to say sorry that he lost a calf. The thing is the tags only good for 30 days. Now I have one hound currently and have some friends with some hounds but really only coonhounds they've ran a few cats here and there in the snow but nothing much. So we are looking for another dog currently or at least some advice on how to go about trying to catch one since they won't let us run them during any other season we thought we might as well try. We might be wasting our time but I'm up for the challenge so if anyone has any advice at all on what to do or how to get our dogs to take a track if we are lucky enough to cut one on a road we are going to drag or on a trail camera. Thanks!

If your dogs can trail a coon then they should be able to trail a lion. If you do find tracks start by walking them down it, showing them the tracks and encouraging them.

Ok that's kind of what I was thinking I'll try that if I can find some fresh tracks. Thank you very much.

What part of Nebraska are you in? And are you limited to only chasing the lion if you find him on the landowner's property?

My guess is they got the problem lion, and didn't want to pay any animals damage claim money they are just giving him a little good will tag knowing there is a very remote chance there is another lion anywhere close to his property. It's worth a look but don't invest too much in this. Right now it is hotter than blazes so if you find lion sign fresh you might be better off trying it at night especially if it is in the river bottoms. You never know you might end up looking at a few coons anyway.

Good luck!

Ethen read that permit and what it allows. Get a copy and kee it on you. I have had people contact me and say they have one but can't provide it. I have herd of the case and would believe it is a valid tag. Second reread it and what it allows for. I had another friend who had one in his yard and he has multiple small children it wouldn't run when he walked out side. They said shoot it when he called the local office. It got out in his grove but by that time it was beded in the grass. Some one from the game and parks showed up and said the head people in Lincoln said that he couldn't shoot it. After he left they jumped it at 10 feet in front of him and it ran off. Over the next 2 weeks the neighbors cattle got run through the fence 4 times. He saw it multiple times. No permit issued. I have had multiple other people fed up with this topic and the politics involved, contact me as well when someone tells them I have dogs or if they see them in my truck. They don't want to follow the law and I am not going down that road so I tell them the steps if they decide to go down that road. This is a hot bed topic right now good luck. Like Mr. Leonard said try at night. Game activity is the highest from 12 -5 this week so far in our area humidity is up and the temp is down.
