Getting dogs to come out of the bush

Post by brodieross »

Hey boys. So when I go bear hunting I take 3 dogs. One is a 9 year old dog and two are 12 months old and have been started, they run pretty decent. But if they lose a track and the pups fall out or whatever, the young dogs will usually back track and bit, but then they just stay in one area and go back and forth, it doesn't matter if they are together or not when this happens they both do it. This has happened maybe 4 times. Each time Ive had to walk in there and get them. And when I start calling for them, it almost seems like they think I'm going to get them in trouble because they wont come to me until I'm really close to them. They come to their name very well in any other situation though. The old dog is great. If they don't catch the bear he will work his way out to a road and walk the road until I pick him up. Im assuming the only thing I can do is just leave the pups in there for as long as it takes for them to come out on there own and praise them up otherwise they will learn to just stay put and I will come get them. What do you guys do to get your dogs to learn to come out of the bush when the chase is over?

My dogs are tone trained and once I know a race is over I call them and tone them. I usually don’t have an issue with them coming back to the truck at this point. I always call before I tone so they know they are supposed to come back to the truck and not in trouble for what they just ran.

What if they are 2 km away from you and you cant get any closer? And how do you actually get them tone trained?

I tone train mine by first taking them out to the fields and let them run, then when they get a 100-200 yards away or so, I tone them as I call them so they associate the tone to coming back to me. Then when they come to me I pet them up or sometimes give them a treat if I have any. I do this a few times then I let them get out and just tone, see if they come back. If they do I praise and reward them if they don't, I go back to calling and toning together. Doesn't take long they will have it down.

Going back and forth on the track is a genetic issue and you can train them out of it, but you should keep it in mind as something to try and avoid genetically speaking.

Your dogs can absolutely be trained to come out when called/toned. I like to keep the area close to my body a "safe zone". Dogs know they will not be punished if they can get to (and stay in) that safe zone within a few feet of my body. And when there is trouble, they crave the safe zone and get there quickly. This gives you an invisible leash also when walking out; even in the heaviest of brush.
