I was in exactly the same quandry that you're in now......hated packing the 3 element Wildlife yagi in the backpack only to have it get hung-up on every other branch while bush bashing.........

Well..... I bought the Wildlife mini yagi that goes completely into my pack, and the larger Wildlife yagi stays in the vehicle in the event I need to drive to locate the dogs.

Sure, the mini yagi has 15% less reception, but so what, at least I can stow it completely in my backpack and take it anywhere. I figure if I can't locate the dogs with the mini on foot, it's back out to the nearest road to start driving / tracking.
