I think I agree with both of you and Beebout-it, I think you hit it on the head with both points. I think a lot of the old dogs that were cold nosed were so content to stay straddling the track that they didn’t ever change gears. I think there dogs with better noses, but for the most part I think it’s a choice that a lot of dogs make to not mess with a colder track. I don’t think it’s that they can’t smell it. I have two mature dogs that I hunt. The male dog is going to find the first hog he smells, cold or hot. The female will run over a cold track and look for a hotter one if she doesn’t find one she’ll come back and grub.

I’ve seen the same thing hunting with my buddies that can bait, if the bear hasn’t been there in like the last 4 hours their dogs are conditioned to just ignore the older stuff and go get back on the rig and they know the next spot will have a hot race. But I can turn down dogs I got from them as pups and they will go to pecking out an older track .

Bee bout when I coon hunted I started all my dogs on feeders by themselves. After the third or fourth kill off a feeder, I put them in big woods with no feeders. this stops circling the feeder and coming right back to the truck. I don’t care how good a dog is bred for hunting they are going to turn out doing what you train them to do.

Mule man, you are correct. We as genius handlers create lots of bad habits with our dogs that could’ve been prevented.

I am guessing this hunt was around thirty years ago, Early am I cast skinner, spike & couple young dogs and had roaded them a short distances when they found an old scent and soon opened. Was not long before they crossed the ridge and out of hearing into Roland Creek Drainage. Able to drive to the ridge that divided Baker& Roland creek. What a great place to listen as those dogs trail what sounded like a bobcat that had a little lead on them but was leaving enough scent to create a good sounding trail job. The dogs trailed several good size circles in that large Rowland creek drainage then into a deep side draw out of hearing in the direction of salt lick. I returned to Baker drainage to discover Spike had a sizeable lead on the other dogs and and enjoyed listening to his high pitch screaming bawl has he advanced the track deep into the baker drainage and out of my hearing. After driving a couple mile down Baker road found the dogs were treed maybe only a half mile from the truck, but knew from experience going down hill to the tree was easy, getting back was a very steep climb. Arrived at the dogs to find they had a large tom cougar bayed on a windfall barely out of reach of the dogs. I had no intention of taking the cat and was very concerned for skinners safety as he continued to jump trying to reach the cat. That was a very nerve racking time, but managed to get the dogs and get the heck out of there. As I think back on my hunting days realize how blessed I was to own good hounds and able to hunt so close to home

I agree, you were blessed to have good hounds and be able to hunt close to home. I hunt close to home. Now all I have to do is find some good dogs.

I can see where that might have been a little nerve racking. I can also see where a fella might have a little pride about it too. Thanks for sharing Al. As always, I enjoyed that. Glad to see you’re ok. I get worried about you and your health when you get quiet.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else!

Yes blessed indeed, was only a ten minute drive home once I got back to my rig. Even more blessed to have a wife that tolerated my addiction, never hunted with me, usually gave me a lecture once a season about being so wrapped up in hunting, but if I lost a dog she would help me search for it. Treats these two old dogs here on the place like kids, makes sure they get a pig ear every morning for breakfast. Lets them out of the kennel every morning has a couple nice beds on porch for them. I am Doing good for old guy with lots joint pain and balance issues. Thanks for asking.

She sounds like an awesome lady Al. Any woman that can put up with a dog man is special. This hunting drug we are addicted to is real.
