Wow dwd58 Hope you never have to use all 500 watts on that thing man you would be all over the spectrum your just asking for a huge fine and some time in jail. I'd be real careful your only aloud like five watts or something like that on a CB and trust me if you are using 500 watts your bleeding over in the ham band and they won't be happy.

But on the other hand you are not going to get very good communications using anything legal. There are only a few bands that you are legal to transmit on with out getting a license those are the FRS Channels, CB channels and there is another one but I can't think of it.

KB the only way you are going to get any further range on a hand held is to buy a better antenna one with more gain. Almost all hand helds are five watts some are seven you won't see any that are higher than that because the batteries wouldn't last very long.

DWD58 i'll bet it gives a whole nother meaning to can you hear me now man you could talk half way round the world with 500 watts.

That is the secret to the hand held cobras. Get something big and they never get out of range. They might not be able to talk back to you, but they can always hear what you are saying.

I use a 1200 watt marine radio with a 750 watt amp ship-shore antana, my father-in-law has a 1000 watt marine w/500 watt ship-shore. They go alot further then a CB, and I checked our local laws and we dont need a permit to have or use one. I was talken to another bear hunter one day, I thought he was in the same mountain range as I was, come to find out he was 275 miles away.

motorola

most of the time we use cb freq when in the pickup. I know they are kinda skitzo sometimes but the motorola talkabout radios work pretty damn good when we are elk hunting and working in the woods, plus there are enough channels that you can keep changin it up if someone is on your channel.
