I picked 30/30, but I prefer a 44mag revolver, If someone else is the shooter I like them to have a 30/30 open sites, allows them to see everything and they have better control.

If you are talking black bear with dogs, and the 3 option you gave i think the 30-30 wins hands down. I think he lever guns are a favorite among houndsmen. i carry a 454 cassull M92 lever. It killed 2 last year. Win 94 trapper in 44 mag is hard to beat, In my opinion. I doubt the 30-30 will disappoint you.

This is my 454, slips into a backpack i made for it and my quicktrack.

I use a .444 Marlin and my wife shoots a 450 Marlin and my side arm when I'm not packin a riffle is a .22 Jet. But the 30/30 out of that group is my choice.

I also agree with the 30-30. I have a marlin 45-70 that I used to carry but personally I have enough crap to carry for myself and the dogs so now I use a desert eagle 44mag semi auto on a leg holster and am more comfortable running around the woods. I also carry a glock 10mm in the backpack for cats and such.

I dont know about the 45-70 being the best round if you want'em dead, It's a great round and its been around a long time, but both the .444 & 450 have way better ballistics, they hit harder and move any were from 200 fps to 1000 fps faster, with the 450 being the same weight bullet and the .444 being 100 grs lighter and still hittin around 1300 Ft-Lbs harder. And they both hit harder then the biggest slug you can put in a 12 GA. I loaded up some 200 Gr barnes bullets in my 30/30 and they hit just as hard at 50 Yrds as a 45-70. And thats another up side to the other two newer rounds, even with the leverevalution rounds the 450 & .444 have better down range valosity. So I would say the 45-70 is a heavy hitter, but it's not the best there is!

i've killed tons of bear with a 32 win special. 2 years ago my old man baught me a 45-70 marlin and that is my choice now. i love those open sights and the lever action for the thick brush that we hunt up here in the north west. never had use for a bolt action or a scope around this area

I have a 32 win Sp model 94 pre 64, and had it for many years. I have never shot the dang thing. I'm gonns order some shells for it and try it out this year. But I dont think I'm gonna lay down my mighty .444 for it.
