Wisconsin and Porkies..

Are those of you who are training dogs in WI noticing an increase in Porkies... It seems like they are all over the place this year. I'm thinking we didn't thin em out good enough over the winter.

Yea I seen a few of the porkies this year on the roads. 2 of our dogs got into them today.
Hows the hunting going for you and Travis so far this year. I hunt with Chipper down by Merrill.

We've been doing pretty good. It took us the first week of training season just to figure out what young dogs we were going to run first. I ended up treeing three this past week. I try not hunting the weekends to avoid the crowd. Travis has been hunting with Lucan in Tomahawk the past two weeks because of the gas prices. I know they've been treeing a few. Tell Chipper I said Hi.

ive got into one or first day out been good since tho. do have 2 confirmed road kills. last year seemed 2 b worse 4 me and have found no way of breaking my porky killer

I got into a Porky the very first day of season, and my buddy got into one the first Saturday. There seems to a be a bit more of them than years past.

i shouldnt give advice on that cause ive had some world champion porky dogs- :oops:

ive had a couple, not sure if ever got them 100% broke -but they were bent

if you can ,get them on a porkys track / shock them---

repeat repeat repeat -- lol

shock them on the track ---the instant you know they can smell it -

you dont get alot of chances to do this but if you can , take advantage of it -

on the porky helps but if u can shock them before they get super wound up -- they will remember it longer -

several times- over time , - low power - will beat one big burn

if they do get into one-- pull all the quills you can , and take them back to visit that porky---after the excitements over -

if a lil pain would break them -when they are excited , -they would break themselves--

I think part of it is my fault. This year, I find myself dumping more dogs loose from the bait than usual because of the wolf population here. What I think may be happening is: the dogs are pushing each other trying to locate and find the track and bang, one dog finds a porkie and grabs it and its all over but the quill pulling.
These are all older dogs which I have hunted for years and had never had a problem with until now.
Bottom line, we either have a record population of Porkies this year, or my dogs have all gone senial over the winter.
Rest be assured, there will be a porkie breaking session starting tomorrow.

I had 2 dogs get into one last week. My old dog really got into him. He is steady to vet work but the quills were in his mouth and throat so bad I didn't even attempt to pull them, just took him to the vet. Also, 2 of my dogs tested positive for anaplasmosis. Never had one with it before but now both of them are on antibiotics for it. Anyone else seeing alot more of this? One other guy in the group has a dog with as well.

Joe, You keep all those porkies on your baits. I don't want to pull quills.
I don't think there is any fishers by us joe. Do you see much for tracks in the winter?

oh man...I would hate to have that job before me. I feel bad for my dog when I cut one of his nails a little to short...

Wes,
I see Fisher tracks over the winter, but the areas I see them in seem to change. I don't think there are as many Fisher as their used to be.
The porkies seem to be at an all time high.
I don't think the Fisher has to depend on the porkie for a meal anymore, now they have the turkeys and grouse to feed on.
