I was scouting for elk in a drainage near my house and was hiking along at daybreak with my 11 month old Blackmouth Cur- Tana messing around on the hillside right below me. I came around a corner and saw what I thought was a dead deer in the road. I walked to w/in about 25 yards of it and its head shot up...lion. The cat rolled to its belly and took a pretty good look at me. Then the cur came busting up the hillside and the lion took off. The dog was hot on its tail all the way up the hill until I lost sight. I'm 100% sure she had to have treed the cat, but, being her first 'real' treeing experience she was silent on the track and tree...I looked but couldn't find them anywhere until about 20 minutes later she came back.
The dog was silent the whole time...I think the cat went up a tree and the dog took a look w/out barking and came back to me...? I want to get her out with a few finished dogs and see if I can get her barking at some game because she's pretty good at the rest of the hunt...
Thoughts?

stumbled into a lion
Don't shoot to kill...Shoot to SURVIVE!
I had a pair of litter mate BMCs and the male was treeing his own coon at 6 months but would never bark a lick. I would loose him when I hunted him alone and would find him setting under a tree just looking straight up. I could find him when he was with his sister. She would set down and blow the leaves off the tree. The only time he would bark is if he was running right behind something that wouldn't stop and looking at it. I asked everyone I knew that had dogs what I could do to get him barking treed and everything they told me didn't work. I don't know if he is barking treed now.....you would have to ask the person that stole him from my yard.
Your pup very well could have treed that cat.

No doubt the cat treed, they cant usually get 2 far once jumped but most likely the dog never looked up, if it was even visible. You most likely would have found the cat if you followed the dog 2 where he was hanging around looking for it.
oh well seeing one on the ground is always better than in the tree i say.
it's funny how we always find what were not out looking 4. Do some lion hunting and you'll probably find the Elk your looking 4.
