That was set so they could contiue the hunting season while that crunch the data.

Should be expecting the Department to give a report on how successful the program has been and give their recomendation this year..

Hopefully we can give other counties the option to participate in this program.

We'll have to wait and see..

We caught 17 lions the second year for game dept here in our valley (Methow Valley)that were causing problems. Talked to the game warden the other day and he said he hasn't had one complaint this year (2007)so far. He said this pilot program has worked perfectly and if the legislature aren't convinced by the data he's turned in then they got their heads up their butts. He's hopin they will open it up for the whole state next year. Keep our fingers crossed. gotta git. Bill W.

I think it's great you guys are getting to hunt hopefully more will come but i do have a small probablem that ever since Washington lost there rights Idaho and Oregan have been flooded with non resident hound hunters and people simple moving over. Which is fine Idaho tries to limit hound permits but it is easy to get around and you all know how your doing it. I just think it should be open over there now for everyone thats all

I personally agree with you.. I know some people want to keep it to resident only.. I definately believe it should be open to everyone. and I've sent in my comments about it also..

hunt all over

Post by twispcougarhunter »

Well, since I live in Okanogan county I look at it a little different. Before we lost hound hunting we always got drawed between my two boys and one of their wives. Now that everybody in the state can hunt here and only here and 4 other counties, we seldom get drawed. So you might can see how it sorta gets under my skin that I live right in the middle of the good cat country and can't go because everybody in the state is coming here lessening my chance of getting drawed. I think the whole state needs to open up so people can hunt in their own counties. It's not fair to the locals to overwhelm us with outside hunters and it's not fair to the outside hunters to have to drive for 4 or 5 hrs., spend days in a motel, keeping the dogs in the box, eat junk food and take a chance on the snow conditions being just right. If we could hunt in our own back yards things would be much better for everybody.
I can tell you too that the cougar population is definitely down from what it was here before they started that pilot project. It's just about at the right population density now. Before, we were having lots of problems with cougars killing everybodys' dogs, cats and livestock. In fact I even had a cougar kill 7 calves in my corral one summer before they opened it up with the pilot project.
We don't find as many tracks now as before they opened it up. we could always find a track within 2 hrs. of leaving the house. Now we average about 6 to 8 hrs. looking before we find one.
Its's working great here and hopefully the legislature will open it up everywhere for next year. gotta git Bill

i can see your view but not seen your view in other people coming over there and huntin i pay the same ammount for a tag and license as you for this state

how fare would it be to only alow county citizens to hunt that county your county would be more populated with houndsmen than any where so now would you make a trip if you had a chance to do what we are doing over there to come to this side if the circumstances are reversed.

i do take a chance on snow conditions for that trip but i dont need the snow for that advatige i live on the west side drive 1 to 3-1/2 hours to bear hunt all spring when guys hunt in my back yard all spring and im not saying it not far but also not complaing about it just sayin we all have the right to hunt any where any time and it shouldnt be a prob i own a house in idaho and are a washington citizen and the people i know over there dont seem to mind i also drive 3 hours south to hunt oregon and have made some pretty good friends thereand they dont seem to mind

that is the prob every hound guy is there for one thing them self if we never see eye to eye on all things but the little hunting we have left in this state we need to get along and sice it sounds like you hunt for the dept you shouldnt be botherd by it you get more opertunitys to hunt over there than we do

i see how you locals over there react to out of towners and this may not been you but it was a local with dept some one cut a lion track smaller female and ran the track out for a good 1/4 mile up the road on a sled now i know this for a fact cause my dogs struck the track out of the sled box and finding a track was not so easy so i turned loose treeing the cat an hour or so later and tis year gettin the stink eye from one local with dept emblim on his truck tracking a cat where we were able to drive our rigs so ether way we will prob never meet and never see things the same way and im sorry but till it is county res only i will put in and come over there till it changes and more than likely kill one of your local cats and you can come over here and berar hunt and prob feel the same

got me rong

Post by twispcougarhunter »

Nw cat. You got me wrong. I don't blame west siders for coming over here because they don't have much choice. I wished cat hunting would open up for the whole state so west siders wouldn't be forced to come over. When we all hunt in one small area it gets sorta crowded, don't you agree? I will never come to the west side to hunt nomatter what even if that's the only place left. I hate cities and zillions of people and when I get over there I get the heevey jeevies around all the city dwellers. Kain't take it. I don't hunt for the Game dept. I will go catch a problem cat for them for free if they want. They have hired some local hound doggers here to do the Dna thing but I refuse to doit because they don't pay except your gas and make you wear them game dept. clothes. I ain't wearin them clothes, period. Them hound doggers they got are really gettin into that badge and sign on their pickup around here. I know em perty good and they use to be perty good fellers but they have almost gone tothe other side you might say. They got all these cats named and feel real close to them and are offended when somebody shoots one. Not my bag. I'll shoot a problem cat for them and that's it.
By the way, I even put up a couple hound hunters a few days at my house for free this year from out of the area and I don't get to hunt. never met them before they came here either. Just glad to help a fellow hunter. Hope you get hunting back on the west side so it won't be so crowded over here. Bill

Well I drive all over to hunt to I hunt Oregan and Califnia and I hunt coons in Washington but I have put 8951 miles on my truck and 467 miles on my snowmobile since Nov 20 in Idaho and have tracked 5 lions and I blame it on this 30% nonresident take 30% wolves and lack of game and 40% on Idaho fish and game not managing there cat population and just leaving it a free for all.
Washington was famous for there bear hunting and cat hunting and I see alot of cat tracks there when I'm horn hunting so since the feds are so good at transplanting game now like the wolve maybe they'll be able bring back the big cats when there all gone.

Go to the website and send an email to your representative. Let them know that people are paying attention to the bill and hoping that more hound hunting opportunites will be made available. These folks are in Olympia and sometimes need a reminder that we pay attention and appreicate their efforts use science and common sense in managing our wildlife.

I would also recomend a Training season (Pursuit Only) I've heard rumors from WDFW that this program will be open to all hunters.. Deer, ELK etc for the cougar permits....

I would make it a point to clearly ask that they allow for us a season to train our hounds.

Especially if they open this program up to all hunters not just Hound hunters..Then I would like to see a stronger Pursuit program for those who do Own hounds.. I could care less about Elk, Deer hunters drawing these tags as long as the folks with the Dogs can train and get pursuit..

I know some people probably don't agree with this. And will send in that they only want Hound hunters to participate.. Keep in mind that you might lose, So I urge you to Mention the need to be able to train your dogs even if you don't draw a permit...

Personally I'd prefer knowing I could get a pursuit season every year for Dog owners, Then the option to put in with deer and elk hunters for a kill permit..

Just my two cents..
Buddy
