Took the hounds out last Friday and ran into several elk camps, turned back and hunted lower and struck a tom pretty early on. I loaded my backpack and got in behind those six dogs as they headed into roadless country. Nearlyu seven hours later they were gone over the top of the mountain and I was back to my truck--it was 3:45 PM.
I raced up over the mountain and located the dogs headed down off the backside and was able to run them down before dark. The hounds were still cold trailing and headed into no man land. The dogs got nearly a whole day of trailing exercise and I got five or six more hours afoot than I needed. Maybe I'll get out again on Friday, as it's an open day between general elk and deer season. But it won't be long until the rifles are put away and a guy can get serious about cats........

I prefer the yearlong season cause it gives us a chance to hunt our hounds year round and keep them sharp. A guy does need to stay out of the big game hunter's way as best he can since their seasons are short and ours are long. However, there are windows in time that don't really effect others and provide the hounds and handlers a little field time and exercise.......
