There have been major struggles within the state of Montana as how to manage lions. The entire state cannot be covered with one plan. Even some regions cannot be covered well by one management plan. I feel fortunate to get to hunt after living in Oregon. It is a hard thing to tell someone not to kill a legal cat just because you wouldn't. Even though I am a taxidermist and I mount more cats then anything else I still hate to see one die, especially in the areas I hunt. I think most guys eventually get past the gotta kill everything attitude once game starts getting scarce. Some guys never out grow the need to rack up numbers of dead cats, which is sad.

You can run coons and yotes in montana year round. As for treeing a cat during the off season they would be hard pressed trying to prove in the summer that you did not cut loose on a coon and bumped a cat. I see it as no different then when a hound bumps a deer, depends on the warden and how much a hard ass he wants to be for harassing off game. They coon hunt on the eastside in alot of places all year round since they do not have the cat numbers.

Leave it in the tree if you want to run another day!!!
