in the mark it for puppys
Hi Iam looking to git into hound dog so i will be in the markit for two puppys nexted summer (feb.-march perferably). I live in the siver city area of New Mexico. Thay dont have to be akc regterd or perbead hounds. But need to be in the price range of 100 or lower.
Might wanna think about gettin a bunch of pound dogs and see if one will turn out, although I wouldn't reccomend it. Might be able to find an accident cross or mixed breed pups for that kind of money, but, you have to remember that often in life you get what you pay for. There is no way around being cheap in houndin, it's something that isn't cheap to do. You can probably get pups with a chance of turning out for around $250 on the low end, but should expect to pay $350-$400 for a proven cross pup, which is what you want after you figure the time, feed, and money you will spend on junk dogs. Self starting automatic pups are worth their wieght in gold. Better rethink your strategy if you can.

A good pup wont cost you that much if you can find the right people who dont mind helping out a new comer.
A good dog comes from good parents and good genetics and has nothing to do with its price tag.
If you could come to central Ca I could get you a real nice pup.
If you ever come this way give me a call

I agree with Vance. Must just be the way we are out this way. But most of the people I know with good dogs, that do breed, if they sell the puppies - are cheap. My uncles had some of the same lines of dogs forever, and he still gives his pups away free. I've been given many pups free, from hunters who know there isn't much hope put into "proven crosses" and "higher odds of getting a good pup."
My best dog was given to me free. And I could have never put a price tag on him. Had lots of offers, just couldn't do it.
My next best would be $150 for Aspen at 7 weeks old.
I know I'm going to be putting a lot of money out on my next litter within the next 2 years. But if she has more than 2 or 3 pups I'll only ask $150. I only got $200 for one of her pups last time and thats because it was my pick female, and I hated seeing her go all the way to Utah. The rest I kept, or gave to people I knew.
If a person was serious about gettin puppies into hunting homes they would be more selective. Not just put a higher price tag on them.

Intersting opinions, all are good. i personally would want to see the parents hunt, see their intelligence levels etc. By proven cross I mean 95-100% turnout in the puppies. Seriously, it is out there, don't let anyone tell you it isn't, rare, but findable.(One is right down the road from you) I feel like I wasted alot of time and money on cheap/any old dog. Once I learned that the dog you put on the ground really matters, and it is not the luck of the puppy pick so to speak, life got alot easier. I paid $400 for a pup this March,(pup was guaranteed by the way) at 5 months old he was making hot shot nance bred year old walkers look stupid, the owner of those walkers was shocked to say the least. If you want the best and have passion for it, seek it out, learn what it is, figure out what you want after you learn how things are supposed to be, and accept nothing but that, otherwise you are selling yourself short. I know about the struggling, just trying to help you avoid it.

I aint trying to start a fight, but no one is turning out 100%on there pups.Find someone that lives close to were you live, hunts what you want to hunt and catches a lot of game. And pay what he asks. You should be able to find a pup for $100 or $200. Larrys right, dont buy every cheap pup that come along,do your homework. It costs a hell of alot more to feed three or four culls, then one or two good dogs

iam also not trying to start anything but, you dont need to pay 300 bucks for a pup, me when i started i got a redtick female for 50 bucks and a walker for free. they were some of the best hounds i have ever had. you just got to pick a pup that has heart, and the want to hunt. If they dont have that then there not going to do you no good. so i dont see the need in spending 300 for something that may not even turn out. Just cause it has good blood dont mean it will be a good hunter. Just my opinion

noboody seemed to notice that i said the pup was GUARANTEED. I think its great that you guys have found good dogs that turned out basically out of dumb luck. I personally don't have time for luck of the draw and might could's. How many of you guys have bought a pup that would be replaced with another if you didn't like it??? How many pups have you had not turn out??? How many of those pups that did turn out required only obedience training??? $50 to $100 adds up after you figure in all the culls you have to eat. Why not do it right the first time???
Pretty bold statement. how do you know that certain crosses out there don't reproduce themselves 100%??? I've also been told that western coastal dogs can't hack it anywhere but over there, is that accurate??Larry Roberts wrote:I aint trying to start a fight, but no one is turning out 100%on there pups.Find someone that lives close to were you live, hunts what you want to hunt and catches a lot of game. And pay what he asks. You should be able to find a pup for $100 or $200. it's all up to gila, both people have good points, u spend the money and i will give u better odds of getting a winner. But be ready cause you could easily get a cull, a littermate could be the best hunter you have ever seen. On the opposite side look for free or cheap puppies and be ready for a cull or you might get a super dog. Its all if you want high expectations and get disappointed or low expectations and get surprised.. Whats worse is when you breed your own dogs have a litter of 8 keep one or two, give your buddies and friends the others and the one you keep is always the cull..
