need advice

Post by gila_hound_chaser »

Hi I am new and looking to get in to HOUND DOGS. I found some walker hounds they are 1 year and 4 months old, some training but not much. One male and one female and are not akc registered but have good mom and dad . What would be a good deal or price for these?

if you are totally new you need to ask yourself why you are interested in those particular dogs, then you need to get ahold of Greg Anderson who is just across the border from you in Show Low Az. and get a couple pups from him or some started dogs if he has any for sale. Save yourself 3-4 years of struggles and start out miles ahead of most everyone else. Any hound is not gonna foot the bill, not saying there are not good walkers out there, just saying that there are ALOT of em out there and unfortunatley they do not reproduce themselves to a high enough percentage, IMO. Go hunt with Greg, I'm sure he would be willing to help you out, and learn how it is supposed to look, you will be glad you did.
As for a direct answer to your question, at those two dogs ages, they should be doing it on their own. Why buy a dog that has been held back and already behind the learning curve?? Do they load on command? Do you have to have them on a leash? Will they road without leaving the county? At their age these things should be automatic. You couldn't give those two dogs to me, and you won't want them after you see what else is out there, again JMO.

I have no idea as to how much you should pay for those dogs if any, but, you can get a hold of Mike Bency, he has a started dog for sale, look under the classified section. Its also a young dog but is hunted a lot, has been on some bears and handles well.

I did what you were/are planning to do a couple of years ago. I got some pups and spent a lot of money to get them up and running, more money than if I would have bought a started dog or two even. I learned a lot doing it this way but it was also very trying. Ryan is correct when referring you to Bency, get one hound (preferably one that is started) and work that one hound. Bency has that one walker dog priced to sell.

I am also in the middle of starting my own pack . I will be retiring to northern maine Jan 09 . I have hunted with buddy's that have had big game hounds for many many years and have seen the GOOD ,the BAD,and The UGLY . My best advice is to choose your hounds like a wife . You do not necessarily want the first one that comes along or the cheapest. Do your research :?: Time is on your side ,you do not have to jump into it immediately . In my case The past 5 years I worked a 2nd job just to save up for this. I am going with a well seasoned hound , a well started hound and 2 pups . out of good bloodlines. The seasoned and started pups I will not purchase until I have hunted behind them. In my opinion there is a lot of trash dogs out there. I do not want to come across as POMPUS and rich ,but it is extremely hard just starting off with pups only. You will be faced with as others have stated trials and tribulations and vet bills down the road. Along with training that both you and the hounds need. Learn from your and your hounds mistakes.and put the learning experience to positive use.Even if you have to wait get the best you can afford You will be Greatly rewarded when you arrive at the TREE

if i had it to do over,i'd start with a finished hound, that came from a real houndsman, and a well started hound.i'd forget about pups, to start with, nothing worse than to start with a bunch junk, that some dog jockey, beat you out of your cold cash for!

I guess I have gotten lucky twice. I bought a dog that was 1-1/2 for 150 and he was the best dog I have ever hunted with. He died this past summer at 10 years old. I just bought a 1-1/2 year old female for six hundred and she is doing great. She's half Leopard and half Walker. I really like what I'm seeing from her so far. I like buying them young that way I can train them the way I like them.

I picked up a 5 year old English dog that has treed 48 house cats by himself by the time he was two. He was hunted by a guy that had a contract with two trailer parks to rid them of the cats. The dog has been on a few lions but hasnt been tested by himself. I know this dog will tree cats but he's a hound and I'm a fan of the dark side. The Cur side is just easyer to handle. I catch and realease around 25 to 30 cats a year and I want my dogs to come off the tree when called and I dont think he would do that. I plan on seeing what he's made of this year.
