3,000 hound

Post by RUFUS »

Ike what could somebody expect out of a 3,000 hound, you mentioned that a 5,000 was a good hound, what would that make a 3,000 hound (OK)?
im assuming that age has big part in this figure ?

Rufus,

You're talking to the wrong guy cause I don't as a rule buy or sell hounds. If you're talking about me saying a good bobcat dog was worth $5000. bucks, well, that comment was echoed by lots of guys awhile back on one of the bobcat threads..........

From what I hear from the market, a $3000. dollar dog is a pretty well finished lion or bear dog that will run and catch it's own game and is probably around two to four years of age. I'd say a $3000 dollar hound these days is a hound that is still developing. However, I have never bought anything other than a pup, and only one of those, so I just don't have any experience or expertise on that subject.

I sold a five year old redbone to a guide last winter cause in his words, he'd lost his older hounds and his dogs just weren't finishing tracks he thought they should finish. This guy had bought hounds from several of the top dog jockeys that are selling big game hounds in the west today. (And he claimed one wouldn't trail shit and the other wouldn't run anything other than deer--both were shot and buried out back).

I was feeding nine hounds, and just needed to get rid of a hound or two, so I sold him my Sam dog who was a five year old. Now that Sam dog was out of my Ike dog and had never had to go catch anything by himself, but he had ran with my dogs for four and a half years.....and had the same blood. I told that guide what my Sam dog was, and that I didn't know whether he'd take his dogs to the tree or not. However, I gave him a guarantee that if Sam would not get it done I'd come take him back. Last I knew, that dog had rigged a tom lion from the box on his first hunt and put it in the tree. He sold for around $3000. bucks but probably would have brought much more had I been looking for a sale rather than doing a guy a favor...............my wife is still unhappy with me selling that Sam dog.

I have a friend that does raise, train and sell pups and young started dogs. He has sold two year old dogs for $3000. bucks, and I wouldn't put any of those dogs in the same class as that five year old Sam dog I sold....

But a solid rig dog that will strike bears from the truck and go get it caught is worth more. Likewise, a dog that will strike a lion or bobcat from the truck would be on higher demand and command more money. Sorry but you need to ask one of these dog jockeys cause I'm just not in the know............

RUFUS,
A basic rule of thumb when buying or selling anyting, including dogs. Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. You might have a dog that is worth 3,000 to one guy and 300 to another.

I sold my best dog for less than what I could have gotten for him, but I knew the new owner was going to give that dog the best life possible so to me taking less than what I could have gotten from some stranger was worth it.

I do NOT consider myself a dog jockey as some people call breeders or people in the dog business. I bred and trained my own line of dogs and sold some pups out of litters I had. Despite what other people say there are some really good people in the dog business that will do their best to be fair and treat you right. Just remember that. Always ask and check refrences when looking to buy a dog.
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!
