Bear hunting the NC Coast

I'm looking at a new forestry job in Columbus County, NC...town is Whiteville. Should be interviewing there next week.
Of course I've been checking out the bear hunting possibilites in that area too!
Looks like mostly private land with several public areas within a mornings ride or closer.
I'm from the VA mtns and now live in northeast GA, What's it like over there. I've heard the following: swampy, lots of poisonous snakes, some kind of small sapling called "hercules thorns?? something about carolina bays everywhere (don't know what that is) and thick, thick, thick.

Is it possible at this time of year to get in on a hunting lease to dog bears?? I don't have dogs but sure do enjoy hunting with them.

Any tips would be appreciated. If I get the job, I'd be moving the family there in August.

the farmer are plantinng corn this year...should be a great year on the NC coast for bear, theey have two counties over there that 70-80 bears are taking in 2 weeks every year.
As for the lease ..not sure but I know we are waiting on a call for us to bring the dogs(we can't shoot) and the middle man has the land and the hunters, as I know more I will pass it along.

east tenn and west Nc .....we are trying to get to the coast theis year nnot sure if we can or not

Howdy,

I haved lived in Eastern nc for a right good many of years on and off.. I have hunted all over nc and up and down the coast here alot.. I know alot of spots !! I'll help ya out best I can.. Leases this late in the year I highly doubt you'll find anything.. Got 160,000 acres public land just north of me with great bear hunting and another public land place south of me.. I have hunted bear on both.. Its super thick and swampy in most parts.. Snakes and Gators... The sticker bushes are a pain in the butt about like Laurel that you got up in the mountains.. I hunt up in the mountains alot too.. My aunt has 300 acres in Bland Co. Va.. I also hunt a ton in the mountains of Nc.. I was raised on a big farm In west virgina for a right good many a year so I hunt up there too.. Let me know what you wanna know.. I got maps and I know all the places like the back of my hand...

i know how that goes.....we will most likely be down there for week just waiting to here back from the farmer where we usally stay
